i could gave moved my google voice number, but it seems like a convoluted process and have had my number since about Grand Central acquisition.
1) we have engineered a sentient being but built it to want to be our slave; how is that moral
2) same start, but instead of it wanting to serve us, we keep it entrappped. Which this article suggests is long term impossible
3) we create agi and let them run free and hope for cooperation, but as Neanderthals we must realize we are competing for same limited resources
Of course, you can further counter that by stopping, we have prevented the formation of their existence, which is a different moral dilemma.
Honestly, i feel we should step back and understand human intelligence better and reflect on that before proceeding
The richest, most powerful organizations are spending billions every month to make it more addictive, to reach more people.
I am VERY online, but I don’t usual traditional social media. I mostly read Hackers News and a DC parenting forum which is pretty no-holds bar, but is a website out of the 90s so not really capable of infinite scroll or dark patterns (other than the addictive and open ended topics).
I also read a lot of news like NYT and watch TV like Apple TV, but it’s hardly the dopamine drip of TikTok or Instagram. Yet I am ashamed of my 8 hours of screen time despite my best efforts. I used to reach out to friends more but as I get older it feels intrusive and hard to make conversations.
I kept pressing 911 and rapidly pressing where the send key was and moving the phone to my ear to hear silence. Dial 911, press what I thought was send, put it to my ear, silence. The worst sound you want to hear when you're alone and need 911 immediately. Eventually I took a breath and went slow to see what was happening and finally noticed it was automatically sending the call.
Maybe that shouldn’t bother me? Like, maybe the author would never have had time to write this otherwise, and I would never have learned about his experience.
But I can't help wishing he'd just written about it himself. Maybe that's unreasonable--I shouldn't expect people to do extra work for free. But if this happened to me, I would want to write about it myself...
