nuthje commented on How ChatGPT spoiled my semester (2024)   benborgers.com/chatgpt-se... · Posted by u/edent

Might be worthwile to have an actual conversation with your peers instead of just deleting and running over it. Maybe they thought your level of work was lower than that produced by GPT? Maybe they thought it useful to have filler draft instead of starting from a blank sheet? Maybe they have a sick parent at home and needed to fill it in just to move on? Complaining externally and not communicating is just a very tiny step up from what your classmates are doing.

Also having your entire semester spoiled by some incidents induced by random passersby? Come on, university is for growing up, start.

> generally people prefer cold beer

Do they? But why? Why would they? Are they simply accustomed to tasting it that way? I should say "not tasting it" because chilling a beverage basically kills its flavours, and they never make it to your tongue correctly.

I would say that many people would be surprised and amazed if they tasted such things as Pepsi without ice, and without coming right out of the fridge.

Unfortunately, any lack of refrigeration really messes up supply chains and will eat into anyone's bottom line, so it's not a realistic goal.

This stuff is panel-tested out of the wazoo. There's a reason bitterness, hoppiness, alcohol levels, differ market by market, even on brands of the same brand/line extension.

Beer also does not require refrigeration throughout the entire supply chain, they happily sit in a warm warehouse waiting to be picked up by an unrefrigerated truck, only to be cooled at the outlet or consumer.

nuthje commented on Apple and Meta fined millions for breaching EU law   ca.finance.yahoo.com/news... · Posted by u/Aldipower

> Apple faces a €500 million fine for breaching the regulation’s rules for app stores, while Meta drew a penalty of €200 million for its "pay or consent" advertising model,

> The procedural fines fall short of the two giant penalties issued by the EU executive under its antitrust laws last year: €1.8 billion to Apple for abusing its dominant position while distributing music streaming apps, and €797 million to Meta for pushing its classified ads service on social media users.

Really honest questions: are those fines actually paid, in practice ? Is there a way for a citizen to know ? (As in, do they appear in the public budget of the UE ?) Or are they somehow deducted from subsidies, added to taxes, etc... ?

I know who collects taxes in France ("Le Tresor Public"). I don't know of a EU version of a treasury. Is it collected by one of the member states (Ireland, I would guess ?)

nuthje · 4 months ago
> Fines imposed on undertakings found in breach of EU antitrust rules are paid into the general EU budget. This money is not earmarked for particular expenses, but Member States' contributions to the EU budget for the following year are reduced accordingly. The fines therefore help to finance the EU and reduce the burden for taxpayers.

This quote is re: anti-trust, but likely generalizes.

Not only does it take up the entire wall, IIRC part of it was actually cut in order for it to fit that wall.
nuthje · a year ago
The sides were cut to fit a place in the old city hall (now palace) on Dam square in 1715.

A given rail system can do freight or passenger well, but not both.

The US system is optimized for freight.

It's not obvious that passenger is a better choice.

nuthje · a year ago
It is for the passengers.

Things have diverged for the US and Europe pretty significantly post-pandemic. I'd be curious to see updated data.

Which things? Based on what data? You're asking for data to substantiate your statement -- maybe first have the data?

"Climatized"? Is this a fancy way to say "it has air conditioning" or does it mean "this building is so big it has its own microclimate without any attempt on our part to make this happen"?
nuthje · a year ago
I gather it's a way of saying it's climate controlled, i.e. heated or cooled depending on the season. I suppose as a contrast to calling any semi-random outside space the largest reading space.

Their commercial offering is advertisement, which seems to be liked.

In case you're tempted to upgrade from your laptop's mic, consider almost any mic other than the Blue Yeti: https://dontbuyayeti.com/

Some great suggestions, but even the cheapest alternative is 100% more expensive than a Blue Yeti. The recommended one is 400% more expensive. Meh.

Bloomberg's value is the timely access to data and analysis. What data does the provide? I didn't see it on the page.
nuthje · 2 years ago
Main value is the chat still.
