npinsker commented on DeepWiki: Understand Any Codebase   aitidbits.ai/p/deepwiki... · Posted by u/childishnemo

Isn’t this supposed to be a short technical blog? Why does it seem like they’re a salesman and it’s a sales pitch?

> "We are generating more code than ever. With LLMs like Claude already writing most of Anthropic’s code, the challenge is no longer producing code, it is understanding it."

The first sentence already is obviously AI generated, and reading through it it, it is obviously completely written by AI to the point of it being distracting.

I understand the author probably feels that AI is better at writing than they are, but I would heavily recommend they use their own voice.

I’ve personally started to try to think about the points someone prompted an AI to generate some text (the actual thoughts of the author) so that I can more easily skim past the AI generated slop such as: "… you’ll get the env setup, required services, and dependency graph with citations to README, Dockerfile, and scripts, so you can hit the ground running".

Though I agree with you, both of the sentences you cited (the first two in the piece) have mistakes in their English and wouldn’t be written by AI.

I just don’t understand - where the 30% take away by store number is coming from and why giants are fighting tooth and nail to keep it.

Obviously I don’t know economics and costs behind it, but from very uninformed point of view it feels that even 10% would still give quite a profit to stores, even after processor fees.

IIRC Epic Games internally calculated that for their store the break-even point was around 9%. (They mostly run it as a loss leader at a default 12%, but with tons of giveaways and deals, so that percent can go as low as 0%.) So I think somewhere around 15-18% might feel “fair” to me, trying to take into account the value of the platform.

Is the fee reasonable if the company charging it has trouble making a profit?

I have no clue how profitable Unreal Engine is for Epic Games or if its subsidized by Fortnite. I believe their pricing structure only became favorable after that smash hit.

Not quite -- their pricing structure improved before that, when Tencent bought a large minority share.

It sounds like you are depressed, and should figure out whether it's due to maladaptive biochemistry (see a professional) or circumstances (change the circumstances; maybe consider a therapist). Given your post, I'm leaning towards the latter.

You say you have plenty of friends, but I can't help but wonder if they're able to give you the nourishment you need. It's great you have many who care about you -- but no matter how much you go drinking or hiking together, if they can't relate to your troubles, then it can still feel quite lonely.

For me personally, art -- both creating and consuming others' -- has been uniquely helpful. You can pass your feelings to a future self, and there are surely many brilliant people from the past whose work can make you feel understood too. Yes, "this" really is all there is, but it's more manageable if you find someone who sees "this" the same way you do.

What's compelling about "starting from zero"? Maybe that's a feeling you could focus in on and, from that, figure out a goal that compels you.

Good luck. Hope you find happiness :)

Big fan of Janny Wurts, particularly the Empire series she co-wrote with Raymond E Feist. Very surprised she was outed as an AI, though she is the only author I've ever had to pull out the dictionary as she used a word I had never seen and wanted to be sure of the meaning in the context.

I was very (wrongly) confident she was AI. I thought her prose was bland and repetitive and lacking melody, and she was the only human author to explicitly mention demons in the first paragraph, which is something that happens when you prompt an AI for a demon story.

The twist had potential, but to me wasn’t executed as well as it could have been. I was hoping for some stronger irony — e.g. if the mainlanders had pushed for the bridge, but not the islanders; or a sentence about how the demons were very surprised, but nonetheless went on to take over the world before they knew what had happened. As it is, it felt underdeveloped and slightly uncanny in an AI-like way.

npinsker commented on Ask HN: Tesla switching from "Godot" to "Unreal": is this ~informative?    · Posted by u/zepearl

By default, Unreal’s 3D rendering is more opinionated and much prettier out-of-the-box. In this domain, shooting for prettiness with minimal effort is a great decision.

Nothing wrong with Godot — it’s doing great right now and is rapidly improving, and is a serious competitor in the indie space.
