Landlords are completely capable of leaving units vacant all by themselves and there isn't any evidence that realpage clients were more likely to do that.

My source was this article which broke the RealPage story three years ago:

https://www.propublica.org/article/yieldstar-rent-increase-r...

> For tenants, the system upends the practice of negotiating with apartment building staff. RealPage discourages bargaining with renters and has even recommended that landlords in some cases accept a lower occupancy rate in order to raise rents and make more money.

...

> Apartment managers can reject the software’s suggestions, but as many as 90% are adopted, according to former RealPage employees.

I think this is good, but I doubt it'll actually impact rental prices as much as people think, because the problem is fundamentally a housing shortage.

The problem is fundamentally a housing shortage AND RealPage recommended to large rental operators that they leave apartments empty. So they definitely did actually pour gasoline on the fire.

There is not a mention to the deprecation of 3.5mm audio port by the largest manufacturers.

I mean, a couple of people and I are in this situation, more or less. Corded headphones were cheaper, didn't require pairing and didn't have rechargeable batteries; they either worked fine or didn't work.

Extremely good point! Another theory I have is that the ipad generation has grown up and they're now out unattended in public.

Your point about corded headphones being cheaper could mean that this is just a result of poorer people using public transit

The article is clear — lottery offer of a seat in a school which met inclusion criteria. Inclusion criteria are clearly outlined in the supplemental materials which are a single URL away which also include details on the allocation.

Talk of causation anywhere other than the unit of randomization is speculation.

the definition in your linked paper is quite self referential

> the benefits of low crime

Note: An ideal government wouldn't define a bunch of victimless behaviour as a crime. Low crime would mean low murder, low car hijackings, etc - things that actually affect people.

novia · 2 months ago
Which crimes do you think are victimless exactly?
