nisegami commented on US Immigration on the Easiest Setting   pluralistic.net/2026/02/0... · Posted by u/headalgorithm

Summary: legal immigration is very difficult to impossible.

The solution, IMO, isn't "just enter illegally". When you're not a citizen then, quite frankly, the fact that you want to immigrate doesn't matter. It's the country that says whether you should get in or not.

The Europeans didn't refrain from creating colonies in the Americas after learning it was already inhabited.

I feel like there are some key differences between the companies though.

The second one outlined for Meta is:

> Heavily-redacted undated internal document discussing “School Blasts” as a strategy for gaining more high school users (mass notifications sent during the school day).

This sounds a lot like Meta being intentionally disruptive.

The first one outlined for YouTube is:

> Slidedeck on the role that YouTube’s autoplay feature plays in “Tech Addiction” that concludes “Verdict: Autoplay could be potentially disrupting sleep patterns. Disabling or limiting Autoplay during the night could result in sleep savings.”

This sounds like YouTube proactively looking for solutions to a problem. And later on for YouTube:

> Discussing efforts to improve digital well-being, particularly among youth. Identified three concern areas impacting users 13-24 disproportionately: habitual heavy use, late night use, and unintentional use.

This sounds like YouTube taking actual steps to improve the situation.

Not realistic to reply to all your replies re:youtube, but they've absolutely added some features to mitigate bedtime use and at least for me they were opt-out rather than opt-in.

I'd argue 2 types of users are

* People using it as a tool, aware of its limitations and treating it basically as intern/boring task executor (whether its some code boilerplate, or pooping out/shortening some corporate email), or as tool to give themselves summary of topic they can then bite into deeper.

* People outsourcing thinking and entire skillset to it - they usually have very little clue in the topic, are interested only in results, and are not interested in knowing more about the topic or honing their skills in the topic

The second group is one that thinks talking to a chatbot will replace senior developer

I find myself in both groups depending on the project/task. I wonder what to make of that.

I don't know whether it's a part of the joke or not, but I do get a `alert(XSS)` when I load the site from something loaded from https://molt.church/api/canon

Recognizing the US federal government is behaving in a way consistent with facism is no longer a left leaning position.
nisegami commented on Microsoft forced me to switch to Linux   himthe.dev/blog/microsoft... · Posted by u/bobsterlobster

The only tools pinning me to Windows were photo editing apps (Capture One, Adobe), and some music apps (Reason, a whole bunch of other apps) that I barely used. Cut over to Debian about 4 years ago when my laptop started having thermal issues and Covid encouraged me to buy a tower desktop machine. Haven't looked back, it's been so much more productive. The strange and toxic-to-me design choices in the Win11 UI helped motivate the rapid transition.

The only thing that's caused any issue is power management, I'm fairly sure it's not optimal, but it's still better than Win11. That's purely down to lack of effort on my part, and basically setting it for max performance because it's not important to me for a desktop machine. Everything (and I mean everything - sound, video, wifi, bluetooth) else is 100% out of the box working on mid-range commodity hardware, albeit with excessive RAM for my needs. Some of it is a bit clumsy looking in places, but it did look weird on Windows too with some of the apps.

When I did have trouble, it was not like I could get support from Microsoft as the community forum is a joke, but with Linux at least I stand a fighting chance of working around any potential problems.

Is there anything on Windows I miss? No.

Is there anything on Mac that I miss? Yes, there's a few things that I like about MacOS (pre-glass) but I have a MacBook Air for those which is good for occasional use but not as a daily driver.

FYI: latest Photoshop should work on Wine as of this week, but of course that situation may be too subject to change for someone's main source of income.

After using it for many years, I recently switched from JuiceSSH to Termius (com.server.auditor.ssh.client for disambiguation) after having some issues and seeing the writing on the wall regarding JuiceSSH. It took some customization but I was able to get it set up pretty nice and I'm happy with it.

Most revolutions have historically resulted in a lot of death and little change for the better if any. Frequently the outcome is worse than before.

Forest fires are immensely destructive, but they clear the way for new growth in their wake. The same has been said for recessions and the economy, and I think there's at least some comparison to be made for revolutions and societies.

What if increasing global instability renders them sporadically unavailable for certain markets?
nisegami · a month ago
I'm currently on my second extended period of GLP1 agonist unavailability (country-wide). The one I have been using is dulaglutide which is much less potent than the newer ones (it's the only one legally imported here) but being cut off still sucks. However, it's far from the only medication I'm on and not even close to the worst one to be cut off from or the first one I've had issues getting. It's just part of life in the third world at this point.
