I love Proton but the idea of subscribing and committing to renew annually is a turn off. There's probably be a huge market behind the psychology of this.

They should offer a lifetime option for the core service and monetize the add-ons and new features.

That's exactly the reason why so many people prefer giving up their data, their privacy, their freedom.

Personally I'm happy to pay proton a few bucks a month to not have to give up those things.

I'm not criticizing those that do, just that given my financial situation the trade off is simply not worth it.

I think the biggest thing is that it doesn't seem to support other formatters. If my project uses black I don't get to have uv format work for me.

Ruff pretty much follows the same rules as black, and can be made identical with some options tweaking.

So when I moved several projects from black to ruff, there were no changes made to the code.

That sounds well and good, but Unity forced my last company into the more expensive license unilaterally and with no discussion. They doubled our costs just because they can.

At this point, we should all treat Unity like we do Broadcom. Utterly toxic and should be avoided at all costs because they will shake you down and leave you with a lesser product for no reason other than blind greed.

Nothing Unity does will ever recover the goodwill they nuked for money

Did you change to another engine? If so, which one? If not, what prevented you from doing so?

Genuinely curious.

I prefer Ruby because of it's flexible meta-programming capabilities, like I would easily draft my own DSL if I have an idea of how I want the syntax to look like. This is such a powerful and underrated feature of Ruby in my opinion
nickserv · 5 days ago
Funny, I don't like Ruby because it has easy access to metaprogramming. It's powerful, yes, but in my experience it's a powerful footgun that makes the code very difficult to understand and debug 6 months down the line. And if you have a bunch of "clever" programmers working on the codebase, the horror...

I feel like the main takeaway here is that if you want your personal project to last, you should run it on your own server.

Have you tried JRuby? It might be a bit too large for your droplet, but it has the java versions of most gems and you can produce cross-platform jars using warbler.

The speed of Ruby with the memory management of Java, what's not to love?

Also, now you have two problems.

Great news, good on them. Not only does this make their lives better and safer, but it can help many other cities. Sometimes just knowing that something is possible is enough for people to achieve it.

Someone has to put a chart near it, describing the decline in driving in the city. When you're limited to 30kmh, you might as well get a scooter...
nickserv · 23 days ago
Yes that's probably the point. Cars kill many more people than scooters.

"The growth marketing team has identified an untapped demographic".

Non-experts is always a larger group than experts.

A design prioritizing non-experts does not benefit experts.

Moreover, experts know they are trying to solve hard problems and benefit from tools that recognize the nature of solving hard problems entails doing hard things.

Or to put it another way, though there is a large market of people who don't play the violin, a ukulele is not a violin.

Exactly. There is pressure to sell to as many people as possible, as cheaply as possible. This leads to "simplifying" the UI.

Generally this means power users now have to click 3 times instead of 1.

Of course there are alternatives, like having an advanced mode or keyboard shortcuts. But that takes time and effort for a typically smaller set of users.
