I think Twitter's lack of safety and moderation of adult and illegal content is one of the next shoes to drop in the amazing reality show of the Twitter takeover. There is so much hardcore content on Twitter I have no idea how they get away with it. It's an area though where no service that accepts user-generated content is perfect, it's just how fast and well you respond when something goes wrong.

Reminds me when a morning news service was live scrolling a twitter hashtag on tv and a dick pic popped up. The reporter was so surprised, lol.

so does that mean working out more => more breath/CO2 => more weight loss?

trying to reconcile this with the conventional advice that weight loss is 90% about eating right

Makes me think of something I always wondered; did Steve know programming? He did work at Atari right?

I think I’ve always attributed Steve’s huge success to 3 things; Meeting Woz, Meeting Markkula and spending a lot of time to practise articulating himself.

I must admit, I envy the man. Who doesn’t. Apple is a fantastic company and keeps releasing great products.

nashequilibrium · 4 years ago
He definitely knew how to program, just by listening him talk about it. I don't think he was a Midas but he understood it. He was really smart, listen to his lecture to MBA students in the early 90s, for a guy who never went to college, his understanding of microeconomics was amazing.

> Also, I have ADHD. This is probably relevant, but I haven't quite figured out how.

Are you medicated for this? I got diagnosed with AHDH last year. The doctor I'm seeing specializes in ADHD and OCD and they have found in their experience that there are kind of two forms of ADHD. One is the hyper active part giving struggles to focus. The other is a motivation side of it where it's difficult to even get started on tasks. For me it was certainly the latter and the techniques + the medication I have now have really helped me feel productive and motivated again (inside of work and in my free time).

Would really suggest seeking help with the ADHD.

nashequilibrium · 4 years ago
I don't think I have the motivation type ADHD but I do struggle to get motivated, especially after the initial excitement phase of a project. What I found worked for me was a particular set of songs, once I put that playlist on, within 5 minutes I'm in the zone. I don't ever listen to that playlist any other time.

Here's what I miss, there were these two hole in the wall restaurants in LA that we discovered,we would travel for an hour due to traffic. The food was amazing and we would always have time to chat with the owner and staff, it was always just a few tables filled, beautiful paintings. Then one day, we went to one of them and the line was out the door, inside was packed. The owner was surprised at the growth but some Hispters put it on yelp with good reviews and it just blew up from there.

The quality of the food went down in a big way, especially the speciality drinks they would make but the owner was able to open up 3 more of those restaurants. The other restaurant still hasn't been discovered and is not on yelp but we haven't been since the pandemic. I guess, something is lost and something is gained but I miss finding high quality, low trafficked restaurants and sharing them with close friends.

nashequilibrium commented on L-Arginine potentiates radiation therapy for cancer   news.cornell.edu/stories/... · Posted by u/PaulHoule

Radiation oncologist here, the radiation dose delivered (32Gy whole brain in 1.6Gy BID) with boost to tumors is highly unusual and outdated. It causes short term memory loss at a higher rate than stereotactic radiosurgery - which is the preferred standard of care for unresectable BM if the disease is limited.

Stereotactic radiosurgery regularly achieves control rates >70% without any radiosensitizers.

That said, solid work, and bravo if L-Arginine works. Next most obvious work would be to test in stereotactic radiosurgery.

Im just curious, why is a Radiation oncologist on HN?

Having worked in a consulting firm for years, I spent very little time in the office anyway. Instead I was constantly deployed to client sites. I wonder how this will impact those who are working for clients who have different policies. Will the consultants still be remote, or will they have to adhere to their client's policies, some of whom inevitably will require being in the office. In that case, this isn't as sweet a deal as it may seem.

Also how will they determine this part: "Location does factor, however, into PwC employees' pay, Seals-Coffield said. Employees who opt to work virtually full-time from a lower-cost location would see their pay decrease, she added."

I don't like these stories. It always trends towards the most inflammatory arguments, those being inherint bias and unconscious racism put upon our technology. Real issues in those topics aside, are any articles like this doing anything but feeding flames and generating ad revenue?

Instead, I want to talk about pareidolia. Humans are social creatures. We have evolved to identify others of our kind and read their expressions. This was important to us, as we evolved alongside gorilla analogues as well, and the few of us that couldn't discern one face from another didn't usually last long.

I think we're trying to place too much of a human expectation onto these machines. I think that human features and primate features are strikingly similar, and it's our specialized brains that let us so easily discern. Yes, with enough data and training we could have more accurate models, but we can't cry foul everytime an algorithm doesn't behave like a human does.

I think your comment is a bit dismissive. Facebook is not the first to encounter this, it happened 6/7 years ago and they should have known better. Secondly, if the Data Scientist working on this were all black, this would not have happened, just like the automatic soap dispensers in bathrooms.
nashequilibrium commented on 7-11 is opening 500 EV charging stations by the end of 2022   cnet.com/roadshow/news/7-... · Posted by u/evo_9
UncleOxidant · 5 years ago
Most 7-11s near where I live have very limited parking. And it's not a place where you spend much time shopping - you're usually in and out in 5 minutes or less. Having cars charging there for an hour or more will eat up that limited parking space. It's good to have more charging stations, but it would seem like it would make more sense to have them in front of stores where people tend to shop for a long time - just thinking out loud: maybe this could be a way to revive shopping malls? Offer cut rate charging stations, people walk around in the mall waiting for their car to charge and maybe end up buying stuff.
nashequilibrium · 5 years ago
The big question is, within the next 5yrs how much charge will you be able to get in 10 minutes.
