mrheosuper commented on It’s not wrong that "\u{1F926}\u{1F3FC}\u200D\u2642\uFE0F".length == 7 (2019)   hsivonen.fi/string-length... · Posted by u/program

>We’ve seen four different lengths so far:

Number of UTF-8 code units (17 in this case) Number of UTF-16 code units (7 in this case) Number of UTF-32 code units or Unicode scalar values (5 in this case) Number of extended grapheme clusters (1 in this case)

We would not have this problem if we all agree to return number of bytes instead.

Edit: My mistake. There would still be inconsistency between different encoding. My point is, if we all decided to report number of bytes that string used instead number of printable characters, we would not have the inconsistency between languages.

I don’t think that’s the point. Yes, Siri is crap, but Apple is already working on integrating LLMs at the OS level and those are shipping soon. It’s a quick fix to catch up in the AI game, but considering their track record, they’re likely to eventually retire third party partnerships and vertically integrate with their own models in the future. The incentive is there—doing so will only boost their stock price.

Just because the LLM can access kernel does not miracle make it better. Do you think the problem with Apple AI right now is because they don't have access to OS components?

The comment above says “Friendly reminder to please not confuse the Trump administration with all U.S. citizens.”

Nobody is saying he doesn’t officially represent the USA. It’s about not assuming ALL Americans agree with what the administration is doing. A reasonable ask, no?

mrheosuper · 3 days ago
The Americans expect the world to constantly make distinctions for them while American foreign policy affects everyone regardless of who individual Americans voted for.

You ought to care more then, wouldn’t you say? An American has just pleaded with you not to have this attitude and you’ve thrown it back in their face. Hardly a mature attitude or an open mind.

I don't like how people separate themself from "society" when it's convenient for them. You are part of it, whether you like it or not.

And last time i check, Trump won most of the swing state, so a large part of US believe in Trump.

China has very many start-ups and one man shows shipping utter junk. Germany and the US are not even in the same league. The companies in those countries tend to follow the local laws because they know there are consequences.

Good luck getting compensation when that product from AJDHJk sets your house on fire or makes you sick.

In consumer products, the German and US brands do indeed manufacture in China, but then do their QC and supervision to get to an acceptable level.

You can see how this goes wrong with Anker’s recent recall, where they got blindsided by their supplier and now have to do a recall because their portable batteries can cause fires.

i'm pretty sure if your house is on fire because of anker charger, you can ask them for compensation.

a lot of US manufactures had been recalling their products too.

Friendly reminder to please not confuse the Trump administration with all U.S. citizens.

About half of us are shocked and revolted by pretty much everything he says and does.

>The performance is just unacceptable, it's already 50%+ slower than a snapdragon 8 elite flagship released in the same year.

This is the one thing I don't understand. How many people actually need the top end SoCs that other flagships come with. Phones have been more than fast enough for a long time now. Other than playing some games with tough visuals mid range SoCs are still more than powerful enough.

Complaints about battery life and the modems are fair (though I never had complaints about my Pixel 7 Pro battery life until it failed).

I also found that the photos from my Pixel were by far the best I'd ever seen from a phone. Every phone I had prior was only used for quick snapshots, if I was expecting to want to take something decent I would make sure to pack my mirrorless, with the Pixel I could actually trust it to take an acceptable photo.

race to idle, if your soc has the same power consumption, you want to finish the job as soon as you can and go to sleep.

Which phone brand did you use where it was falling apart after a year? The rest of your comment sounds like you're saying you preferred the iPhone because it takes the option of customizability away from you entirely, instead of simply sticking to the level of customization on Android that worked for you.

for my case, my S21U's back literally fall apart, not the battery issue, the glue just simply gave up

I still carry my Pixel 5 for this reason. 2 replacement batteries in now and I have a spare sitting on a shelf. That said the Pixel 9A is tempting as it's not much larger than my Pixel 5. I hate that the finger print readers have moved to the front though. The sensor on the back of my 5 is perfectly postioned and also acts like a little track-pad for opening the notification tray. It was a perfect design IMO.
mrheosuper · 3 days ago
i would still use my px5 if it were not for 2 stupid problem: The promixity sensor does not work, thus the phone still think it's in pocket and won't wake the screen. Another problem is my power button has been missing.
