mmphosis commented on Ask HN: Which Linux or windows desktop do you find the easiest and fastest?    · Posted by u/gitprolinux

Linux Mint Xfce. It's definitely not easy because I was so used to mouse and spacially oriented Mac OS X. It's fast enough because of fast hardware, and it doesn't get in the way, and I customize it. I remove unused parts. I have customized it to my own preferences. I put up with the rough edges. The only thing missing is the menu bar. Xfce is not my favourite but I can customize it which is reason enough.

LibreWolf, and Firefox Nightly are the only browsers that I use.

I have hope for servo and Ladybird.

I refuse to go anywhere near Chromium and all it's derivatives.

The batteries are long dead on the devices that ran Safari.

Cost: $0

Currently, I treat all generated code as "sample code" which is not of much use and a waste of time but let's see what the future brings.

I use llama to generate "boilerplate" in simple non-coding sessions.

Although my writing skills aren't great, I find that starting with pre-written content makes it easier for me. Llama-3.2-3B-Instruct.Q6_K.llamafile

Linux will be stuck in the 5% range as long as people who love Linux are the ones making Linux.

You still cannot crtl+V in the terminal. No faster way to scare off users than give them a CLI heavy OS and have the trip over the very first copy+paste command they try to run (once they figure out the circa ~1982 cursor)

I really cannot say enough about the total fumble of Linux distros in an age when people are more desperate than ever to leave Windows.

Coming from decades of using a Mac, I swap left alt and left ctrl. I remap the Terminal using AutoKey so that ctrl+c and ctrl+v are copy and paste, and alt+c effectively sends a ctrl+c to terminate a program.

I fire up Mac OS X 10.5.

Lacking that I use lots of monitors, turn off window snapping, swap the ctrl and alt keys. I cringe a lot. Why can't windows store position and size hashed to monitor layout? I get that PC hardware is janky but why the random monitor layout? I never want mirroring, why is mirroring the default? Why would I want 2K resolution on a monitor that can do 4K? I could go on.

I am adept with the mouse so I have come realize that we all have different preferences.
