That's more proof that TP-Link should not be trusted than that there is a problem with IPv6, really. Even cheap $20 Aliexpress routers have a firewall enabled by default.

Agreed.

I believe that was more a bug in the firmware that's been fixed for a while now.
mlangenberg · 2 days ago
In case of the ER7212PC, it’s only fixed in the v2 hardware revision.

No free upgrade.

> There are also still a lot of misconceptions from network administrators who are scared of or don’t properly understand IPv6

Enable IPv6 on a TP-Link Omada router (ER7212PC) and all internal services are exposed to the outside world as there is no default IPv6 deny-all rule and no IPv6 firewall. I get why some people are nervous.

Is there anything comparable in the TP-Link Omada ecosystem?

Docker could be run on the VPS, and the storage leg could be encrypted.

I'm presuming some VPS providers allow converting your VPS disk image to something that supports encryption.

mlangenberg · 3 months ago
Is that something that docker can do?

I presume gocryptfs can be used to wrap an SMB mounted Hetzner storage box. Haven’t tried it myself though.

I would be careful storing any personal data on it unencrypted.

The cheapest possible Hetzner VPS (2 vCPU 40GB SSD) and a Hetzner storage box (1TB) works alright for cheap (less than EUR 10/mo). I store my database on the SSD, and the `/uploads` folder on the storage box attached as a CIFS drive. Put it behind Tailscale and it's worked fine for the past few months.

Wouldn’t you want your photos to be encrypted at rest on the Hetzner storage box?
mlangenberg commented on Is an Intel N100 or N150 a better value than a Raspberry Pi?   jeffgeerling.com/blog/202... · Posted by u/transpute

This year I built a NAS . My focus was to optimize the price not the power, so I planned to go with a raspberry 5 or a raxda 5c because of their lower consumption. For what I gathered a RPI 5 and similar draw 3W idle and 12W at full power and a N100 based computer draw 9W at idle and 24W at full power (approximately of course).

But then I looked at the power consumption of the consumer grade HDD disks. 4 disks would add between 10 and 14W at idle and between 16 and 20W in operation, and suddenly the advantage of the arm based computers in power consumption is less striking.

Moreover you can find on AliExpress N100 mini-pc for 120€ with 16gb RAM and 512gb SSD. Aliexpress is risky but it was much less than the RPI5 with 16GB RAM or just a bit more than the raxda 5C 16GB , both without drive, case and power supply. And the raxda 5C would have been also bought in AliExpress so no almost as risky as my N100.

At the end, for cheaper to buy and not too much more expensive in power consumption I went with the mini-pc. I lost the possibility to use extension cards, especially the one that allows to connect up to 5 HDD, but a 4 port USB HDD dock proved sufficient for my needs.

Which 4 port USB HDD dock did you pick? And how did you setup the drives? (MergerFS/Snapraid?)

I actually wonder how I can get them out?

Every background service wants some screen estate in the menu bar, but the app that I need is always hidden behind the notch of my MacBook. Why can’t I hide the ones I don’t frequently need?

I've forgotten when, but it has been a while; I've been with just "Unread" and "Flagged," which are built-in filters of Apple Mail. The "Flagged" ones are the ones I focus on, while the "Unread" is done, forgotten, or "Flagged."

Whichever you use, invest time in learning the shortcuts, and things go pretty smoothly. My mail client is, thus, pretty clean most of the time.

In Gmail, I try to archive or delete everything that I’m done with, but it’s difficult to keep up with many notifications flowing in, which I don’t delete immediately or are relevant for the next few days and I never get back to. It’s easy to get behind.

I’ll try your approach of setting up a default section for ‘is:starred OR is:unread’ and stop bothering with the archive step.

Very important distinction! Apple recently added an “Early Reminder” feature that allows similar functionality which I am very grateful for.

And since Sonoma and iOS 18, Calendar and Reminders are finally integrated, so it’s easy to see upcoming reminders.
