I start to feel like whats the point, I'll just be told its "fake news" and they totally ignore it.

Good article though.

The idea that all now common corona viruses started a pandemic sounds very plausible. At the same time, it makes the fact that there is a huge corona virus reservoir in bats very frightening.
meatpuppeting · 5 years ago
So like if bats are so deadly and common carriers of these diseases that could potentially jump to humans, would it be sensible I guess to pass laws who can import, trade, or come in contact with them? People owning them as pets or anything like that...it should almost just be considered a biohazard and illegal without permits.

Idk random idea...I'm by no means an expert, but trying to think ways to mitigate it.

Most people I know have deactivated their account. I just use messenger.
meatpuppeting · 5 years ago
Yeah same, it's pretty nice that like Messenger app and their site Messenger.com exists to just totally avoid the feed and everything aspect of Facebook.

One of the biggest (but dumbest) things is I signed up for Spotify with Facebook...and need it to log in.

I'm too lazy to like transfer all my playlists and liked songs to a new account.

I am 28 and none of my peers is using FB anymore. I have some older friends that do their yearly christmas party invite on FB and some people who chat with me on FB messenger. There primarily are ads, spam, people posting commercial content and people congratulating each other for their birthdays. Is facebook this dead for anyone else?
meatpuppeting · 5 years ago
Yeah basically same purpose as you. FB messenger to talk to some people or have old friends keep in touch.

2% back on all purchases made via contactless is pretty decent for someone who doesn't want to think about which card to use at the restaurant vs pharmacy vs grocery store.
meatpuppeting · 5 years ago
Yeah I mean it seems like a fine card.

I guess more what I was getting at originally myself was Apple opening a credit card didn't strike me as big news of bigger things on the horizon. Given dozens of other companies do the exact same thing, some also doing the 2% back everywhere thing.

It just seemed like a pretty typical thing large companies do these days.

This is really cool! I'd really like to visit the Faroe Islands when the pandemic is over.

This is starting to make increasingly more sense even though Apple making a car seemed laughable a few years ago.

Apple is fundamentally now a company that can move immense amounts of capital into new industries with the underlying ethos of user experience. Apple Card was perhaps a dipping of the toes moment.

In theory, Tesla shouldn't be worth what it is because the tech behind it is increasingly getting commoditized (though they work hard to stay slightly ahead). But people love Tesla and it's the first choice EV because they've really thought through the UX of a semi-self driving car EV thoroughly.

Apple is just about the only company with a similar ethos and enough money and patience to be a viable competitor and have a competitive brand known for quality.

>Apple Card was perhaps a dipping of the toes moment

Was it really? Dozens of companies have credit cards. Walmart, Uber, Paypal, Venmo, Best Buy, Amazon...it didn't real strike me as big things happening when Apple announced their credit card.

meatpuppeting commented on Sick of spending time on Auth, we built an open source 'Stripe for Auth'    · Posted by u/advaitruia

I know most people are not like this, but I don’t mind setting up auth “over and over”

It’s always a chance to read about what’s changed in the technologies/ideas you usually lean on for it. Apply that simplification that you wish you could have for your already launched application. Maybe you have a need to make your auth slightly more proprietary. If you churn out applications all the time yeah I get why this could all be seen as a waste of time.

I don’t say this to belittle your service at all, looks neat! Just throwing out an alternative viewpoint for the sake of it :)

meatpuppeting · 5 years ago
Usually what happens to me on side stuff, is I spend so much time on the basic setting up auth and other things that are done over and over.......I burn out and never actually make the business logic of the app lol.
