Wow, I can understand why that feels wasteful.

But ... it boggles my mind how someone can change their wallpaper in my mind) 435 times in roughly 3 years. That's a new image every (365 * 3) / 435 = ~2.5 days, all year around. Maybe less if not all files were old images, I didn't read the screenshots too closely.

I'm generally not even aware of the desktop background image (and thus never spend time to change it), it's always covered by actual application windows. Interesting.

The iPhone 4S released in 2011 also had 512MB RAM and got its last security update in 2019

And only got updated to iOS 9. Naturally, the minimum requirements for later version were greater than that.

It is, in fact, the best cure for hangover!

> The only browser feature we leverage are click events

Do the users want their click events fed into an advertising engine? Did you ask them? If you made this opt-in, how many would say, yes, please track my clicks in order to advertise to me? Even if its anonymized/aggregated.

A huge amount of advertising is enabled by tracking users against their will, exploiting the fact that many users aren't aware of what's going on, don't know how to stop it, or aren't as invested in their preference as the adtech companies are in their revenue. "A man is always right in his own eyes". If you're smart it's easy to justify this stuff to yourself because you're getting paid, but that doesn't make it right.

I'm sorry if this hurts your beliefs, but in what way are aggregated and anonymized data exploitative? Every "offline" store does it. How do you expect businesses to make profits if they can't look at what drives their revenue without bothering every single customer with consent requests?
matyasrichter commented on Ask HN: Do you maintain a list of RSS links of GOAT blogs?    · Posted by u/rakshithbellare

Honestly, I looked at this discussion just to know what "GOAT blogs" are.

General rule of thumb with communication: Try to avoid acronyms, because chances are most people will have no idea what you're talking about. If you do need to use them, make sure you very quickly define what the acronym is.

FWIW: Even the Google doesn't know what GOAT blogs are. Searching for GOAT blogs brings up blogs about goats: https://www.google.com/search?q=GOAT+blog&rlz=1C1GCEU_enUS99...

"goat blog" is not a great query to explain an acronym, though.

I'm not sure, I'm pretty sure they're trying to communicate that these are worst case estimates. ~100 seems like it's communicating average case estimates (big theta notation), which isn't really the same thing
matyasrichter · 4 years ago
Big Theta isn't "average case". It describes an algorithm with the same asymptotic lower and upper bounds. How would you even formally define an average case, when the result depends on the input?

Is this the next iteration of the "I browse with javascript disabled" HN comment?

Why would I trust a service promoting finding "good" .com domains that uses .rs as its domain? Were they unable to find one for themselves?

Is it so hard to open the link before posting a snarky comment? It takes five seconds and you'll avoid looking like a fool. Peak HN.

Pretty sure I'm in the minority of HN folks, but I'm a fan of tools/OS'es/whatever that make a concerted effort to follow design trends and present a modern-looking UX.
matyasrichter · 4 years ago
I don't think it's a minority. It's just that those who dislike these trends are far more vocal than those who appreciate them.
