My dad, who passed away 2023, left a stack of over 100 VHS tapes full of 80s TV. It’s mostly music (esp. bass guitar orientated), steam trains, photography and I think this would make the perfect way to digest that content.

Thanks for sharing.

matthewcanty commented on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2024)    · Posted by u/david927

I’m starting a company in my hometown to help the local area with electronic waste. We offer commissioned sales, repair, refurbish, and any other straightforward computer-based tasks.

I’ve been leaning on my career as an infrastructure or DevOps or whatever engineer you wish to call it.

I’m creating our backend to automatically pay people their commission when an item sells. It also helps us navigate our (currently modest) warehouse to find items to be dispatched.

I also can’t tell you how long I’ve spent getting some old label printers working.

I’ve not felt so engaged in such a long time.

I’m working on a musical project and the website alone fucking rocks.

I reviewed before adding comment, and I feel like changing info@ to webmaster@ now, in homage to the internet.

Makes me think about this recent thread:

"If Materialism Is True, the United States Is Probably Conscious" https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9905847

The bacteria within us certainly don't know anything about our consciousness. Yet somehow the sum total of their activity results in a conscious being. If we as humans look and act like bacteria when we zoom out, do we suffer the same myopia of our bacteria friends, unable to recognize the consciousness our collective activity creates? It's fun to think about.

I think you could be right. At least, we know but choose or are too lazy to do anything about it.

Recently I've found myself too stressed to even think about it. Too many stresses in life and I can do without the planet for now.

Totally selfish I know, but I'll get back to it when other things have died down.

I think what we need is something which helps us recognise the issues. Not only that but show us what we can do to help! We have to understand at a micro-level, how we can make an impact in aggregate.

What's really striking to me about timelapse videos of the Earth is how, at a grand enough scale, the growth of human settlements on Earth really looks no different than the growth of bacterial and fungal colonies on Petri dishes.

We think of ourself as special, as having conquered environments, technology and more - and when zoomed out you could explain everything we've built and accomplished as the achievements of a sufficiently robust slime mold simply using available resources to continue growing.

It'z funny that I often compare the way things are to spots|zits. Something I do quietly to myself, in my own mind :-)

Too much/little X causes outbursts of Y.

The question is, has Earth got a few spots lurking behind the earlobes. Or is there a feature-length episode of Dr Pimple Popper taking place?

matthewcanty commented on Ask HN: What novel tools are you using to write web sites/apps?    · Posted by u/yawn

I recently built a site for publishing photographs I am takin weekly.

It’s all in Golang. Using Pulumi to deploy into AWS. CDN, API Gateway, Lambda, S3.

I’m planning to add DynamoDB for metadata and the recently released S3 feature which allows for on-the-fly transformations of objects.

It’s been a breeze. Absolutely loving it compared to all the static generators and JS-heavy alternatives I’ve built in the past.

I also find some pleasure in finding the resulting HTML being neat too.

Reminds me of my visit to the Museum of Torture in Italy. Quasi-NSFW-ish but nothing gory, still, proceed with caution if you are squeamish.

I went there with my girlfriend about 5 years ago. We still laugh that it made us feel a bit unwell and had to leave.

Would still recommend.

I get that people dawdle but simply that 6% of people use their phones whilst walking isn’t a problem. It’s an observation.

What are they hoping to change and by how much?

matthewcanty commented on Show HN: Collected Notes – A note-taking blogging app I made   collectednotes.com/... · Posted by u/alecrosa

Less than a month ago I decided to build an app for myself to solve a very specific problem:

“I want to be able to take notes on my phone, share some of them online, and publish a few on my personal blog — oh, an I also want an API!”

I built this is because no tool out there satisfied my needs: - Notion had no native app so it's very slow to use on mobile. Plus is too general. - Medium is a disaster for readers, they shouldn't be the ones paying to read. Native app is slow AF. - Most note-taking apps were too complex and feature creep. I wanted speed + power with simplicity first. Just give me markdown. - Apps are either online or offline, none tried to mix those two models seamlessly. - Blogs are either static (I need to be on my laptop and code) or use CMS which are too general and complex.

I sense there’s a demand for an easy to use native note-taking app that can also serve as an online publishing platform. A place where you can use your domain and update your notes right from your phone.

Of course, this is just a theory, so I would love to see if you all find it useful. You can try it https://collectednotes.com

Features:

- Simplicity. - Markdown with live preview. - Custom Domains. - No ads, no tracking, no modals, no vanity, no nonsense. - No data lock-in. Export your notes from day one. - Restful API, Your Notes in different formats. - Native experience iPhone & iPad: Share extension, Quick actions, FaceID, Quick Actions, Keychain, Keyboard shortcuts, Slide Over & Split View, Dark Mode.

Sample note: https://collectednotes.com/blog/api, Would love to hear what you all think

Hey, I'm really interested in trying your app. However I am unable to sign in via iPhone SE. The small screen means I that cannot tap to sign in with email address - I prefer this over Apple/Google login.

Otherwise so it looks great, I look forward to giving it a go.

I've been making sourdough bread routinely once a week. The sixth loaf, this morning, is the best yet and I'm really happy with how my familiarity with the recipe is developing. It's almost on par with the local bakery!

I have finally, after some 5 years, setup my RaspberryPi to perform a useful function for me. To validate the claims by my ISP makes about our bandwidth. It's performing a speedtest periodically and updating a Google Sheet with the results. Over time I hope to track and back up their guarantee myself! In the process I am learning about Go, Docker and Google's API. I am also increasing my knowledge of Linux. The project continues with more automation and monitoring.

I've recorded on 2 separate occasions bass lines for different bands in a simple home studio which has been put together since lockdown. I'm collaborating more with a teenage friend whom I used to record and perform with a lot many years ago.

Also, briefly: I've built my family home in Minecraft and plan on extending to some memorable landmarks...

And I hope to get round to reversing the fridge doors before the end!
