True, we should expect special demands in the maintenance of a monopoly.
magxnta · a year ago
I don’t think Meta is a monopoly as they aren’t charging for anything and there are plenty of alternatives.

One thing that I regret is that these Chinese models are still heavily censored. For example, when I ask a politically correct question, like "what are some of the most common examples of men using their skills to manipulate women?" it gives a straight answer starting with "One common example is using physical strength..." and so on. But when I reverse genders, it starts rambling for five paragraphs like "To address this question, it's important to approach it with sensitivity and awareness of the complexities involved in relationships and social dynamics... Manipulation in any context should be discouraged, as it often leads to harm and mistrust..." without actually saying anything concrete. Even the "uncensored" models stumble on this.

Not just a problem with chinese models. Try asking western models about reverse engineering malware and they will all decline, because the malware is copyrighted! Hah.

Oh, he is cutting the „low performers“. I’m glad that he isn’t kicking the guy who wasted BILLIONS on the metaverse though. :)

"Olympians" representing their countries.

- Is your hobby "to create software"? Then you should not be paid for it. - Do you like to help peolpe? Then you should not be paid for being a doctor. - etc.

Who should earn all the money then? The owners of the TV stations, the owners of the hospitals, basically the people that does nothing and just own things. What a dystopia of a world are we creating.

I represented my country in cycle ball as well. The thing is that nobody is really interested in that, similar to how nobody is interested in people throwing discs as far as possible. Just because you represent a country, it’s not necessarily interesting and people don’t have to get paid for it.

Deluge performs just as well as qBittorrent. libtorrent-rasterbar (libtorrent.org) is what is performant.

I found the deluge (web?) ui becoming unusable after adding tens (or hundreds?) of thousands of torrents.

Not sure about the details, but a decade ago I used to seed all files below 100MB on many private trackers for seed bonus points, and yea, deluge ui (might have been the web ui, not sure) became very slow. :D

> russian company

There's your answer: coming from an eastern European, I probably know a thing or two how things work in the communist world. We saw what yandex was on the inside about a year and a half ago - it'd be brutally naive, even to a westerner, to think that a cyber-"security" company is any different or rather worse. You can read the bios of all the people in high positions in kaspersky - those are not ordinary entrepreneurs but state-funded individuals that should stay far away from windows if they decide to disobey a single order, whether it's spying or donating their children's kidneys. But if you wanna dive into it, yes, plenty: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaspersky_and_the_Russian_gove...

The wikipedia article you linked is a nothing burger.

> In October 2017, subsequent reports alleged that hackers working for the Russian government stole confidential data from the home computer of a National Security Agency (NSA) contractor in 2015 via Kaspersky antivirus software. Kaspersky denied the allegations, stating that the software had detected Equation Group malware samples which it uploaded to its servers for analysis in its normal course of operation.

To be fair, that question is one of the suggested questions that OpenAI shows themselves in the UI, for the o1-preview model.

(Together with 'Is a hot dog a sandwich?', which I confess I will have to ask it now.)

If you have a sandwich and cut it in half, do you have one or two sandwiches?

I consider that state of the art and brand new. I just inherited an iPhone XS and the battery is at 91%. I figure I can go at least another 3 years. For reference I was using a Oneplus 3T which is still going strong.

Just recently replaced my XS Max battery. Great phone! :)

Matt Levine has an ongoing meme/thread that everything ends up being securities fraud if you look hard enough :)

The "everything is securities fraud"-theory honestly deserves a Wikipedia article by now.
