Can watching cat videos be turned into productive intellectual activity?

The answer to my question is yes, however, I don't quite know the answer to yours, as enjoyment is somewhat subjective.

However, watching cat videos creates data(and also uses the intellect, i.e., to identify cats, and make some sort of vague judgement), and that data could potentially be leveraged to make algorithms, which makes it a potentially productive activity.

As for what algorithms? Well, algorithms that find out which videos people are more likely to watch, so they can watch even more cat videos.

You are correct, it is an opportunity, and one already leveraged, by the same people who caused the problem.

They want it to run at 120 fps on unplugged devs. What do you expect?

This happened to the entire US federal government in 2014. Someone reply-all'd a mailing from the General Fund Enterprise Business System notification asking to be taken off the list, and it escalated as then thousands of people who didn't realize they were on this list did the same thing, then got worse when smart asses reply-all'd telling other people not to reply-all.

I think it is important to remember not to value judge these sorts of widespread skills. Does it matter today that I can't shape a flint or ride a horse?

Presumably you can use a lighter and drive a car though.

One of those two may no longer be the case for people soon...

I love the Internet Archive and frequently donate to them (2 times so far this year).

What I'd love to see improved is the ability to be less "fragile". Currently it's all located in the US and they have a huge focus on the US, both technically and politically.

But why not try to replicate it all over the world? There seems to have been some smaller efforts inside the Internet Archive to make it more decentralized, but it feels like it should be a much bigger focus on it.

It would be harder to focus all the blame, and the hand of the law, on a single institution.

Currently, only the IA will fall, and anyone who benefited from their seeming folly will have no issues.

I believe there are certain large corporations(far larger then Harper Collins et al.) which would benefit from an enlarging of the domain of fair use around now.

Those pockets are large, and the display of the dollar does more to sway Judges than any real interpretation of the law.

It is safe to say that they will succeed in their (seemingly useless) endeavor.

Nobody can help you here. They would get a Nobel prize if they knew how to raise kids. By having kids you accept all risks involved, to both your kids and yourself.

There is no silver bullet.

As always, going for education is the only thing you can do to reduce risks.

I suppose Firefox could remove this new encoding too
lwswl · 3 years ago
Facebook could also just make it completely opaque, and just add random data to their urls(by which I mean a+b=c, not a+b=ab), and then subtract it on their end. Then you literally might not be able to see anything, not even the webpage directory.
