luto commented on Germany's 49-euro ticket resulted in significant shift from road to rail   mcc-berlin.net/en/news/in... · Posted by u/mpweiher

Didn’t this start as unlimited anywhere for 9 euros no strings attached?

I LOVE the German transit system (although Denmark wins in cleanliness). However, Germany is a bit predatory with this new system. You can ONLY purchase this ticket as a subscription model. If you’re a tourist, you must cancel before the 10th of the month or you get auto rebilled.

Additionally, there are so many apps that resell the ticket as some white label system, so it was very confusing to purchase (you cannot buy them at the machines).

The price hike is the wrong direction here if we are reducing that much time on the road. Kudos though for the great rail systems. The USA has a lot to learn here and it’s baffling how terrible it is here. I doubt I’d ever need a car in Germany given the rail system was much more convenient. In the USA I spend 10-15 mins trying to park any time I go anywhere

It started with 9€, is 49€ now, and will be 58€ starting 2025.

You can buy for a single month when booking through the right company. "mo.pal" is a good one, for example. However, I agree that it is a bit predatory.

For me, integrate an init system that allows for proper dependency management between services. Also, one that keeps track of all processes spawned by a service, allowing me to shut down a service, even if it isn't a well-behaved one with a single daemon process.

That's more or less the only thing stopping me from using FreeBSD (on servers).

I have this feeling that they go after seeders that go above a certain threshold.

Looking into 2.6M individuals, determining that the offense is real, figure out the possible loss to the copyright holder, identifying the user, send all this paperwork to all the public prosecutors around the country and have them prosecute people for $100-$200 loss to some company doesn't seem feasible.

In Germany they also go after small fish. The process is highly automated, so there is very little cost to the copyright holder.

The Infinite Craft game was sending queries up to ChatGPT to make the new items, if I recall correctly. This one is happening so quickly it must be happening locally. Is that right? Is it using a local Javascript LLM?
luto · 2 years ago
It just has a giant database of concepts and their splits built-in. Most of the time it's pretty unnecessary to run an LLM (directly).

I did not leave SE (yet), but I'm currently studying sustainability / waste management / etc. It's going great so far, I can recommend going a different or additional route, if you are able to.

How do phone numbers work under such a system? That seems fundamentally incompatible with how phones work now.

National roaming, this is a solved problem and just how it works in some parts of Europe.

It's an interesting project, but €4k for a camera without autofocus doesn't seem attractive.

Professional cameras often do not have auto focus, compare to some RED camera models. You either prepare your focus points ahead of time or you work in teams, where your camera assistants act as the "auto" focus.

I don't quite understand why blog writers care to include a random AI at the top of their posts. Just give me the content, I don't want to scroll past a random elephant first.

... and yet Germany looks awful on https://app.electricitymaps.com/map . Is that a measurement problem, or something else that we should know?

Burning lots of coal does that.
