Ah yes, that's horrible. No matter if the user couldn't understand a word in the video itself if he needed that translation, let's just deceive him by showing him a badly translated video title in the wrong language. Meanwhile I have to set the site to dark mode and English again multiple times a year because Google struggles to persistently store this simple user setting.
liziwizi · 5 years ago
Ow, yes, the translated titles are so confusing. You think you're getting a video in your language, but no, you don't. It's just a badly translated title and captions.

And don't get me started on those captions! Youtube, please stahp! Why do you keep forcing these? I don't want them, stop pushing them.

Whenever we use Chromecast with multiple people, Youtube enables the auto-translated captions. So, we turn it off, next video youtube turns it on again, we turn it off again, next vid, it's there again. arrgghhhhhh

Do art. Find passion. Do passion.

Or,

Find love. Have children. Be a great parent.

Coding is just a tool, a means to an end, not a career. If you don't like using a keyboard/multimeter/hammer, don't work in an area that requires a keyboard/multimeter/hammer.

Painting and parenting can both be very rewarding, and make you very happy over a lifetime.

As for money, enough to get by, can be enough. Life doesn't have to be about ways to get money.

liziwizi · 5 years ago
yes, i tend to agree with the passion-part of this.

use your free time to do things that excite you, things that motivate you.

a job is a job. you need it to pay the bills. if you can do a job that pays well and you can work in reasonable comfort, appreciate it. there a terrible jobs out there, be glad you don't have to do those.

but you also need passion to avoid getting burned out. if you can't find it in your job, find it in your life, in your hobbies, in your relations.

your job should just be a means to an end. it should support your private life: food, a roof over your head, security and your passions.

maybe visit a therapist to work out what triggers and excites you.

a change of scenery (changing your job) might help for a short while, but unless you work on the underlying issue, the problem will catch up and follow you around.

I've definitely seen it argued that SimCity-alikes (and The Sims) are not games. Whether nor not this is true is IMHO beyond the scope of HN comments.

Suppose it's a game: Cities Skylines is open-ended and has no formal win condition, but you can certainly lose. Your city can go bankrupt, etc.

You're playing against the simulator algorithms. If you succeed then you've beaten those algorithms.

liziwizi · 5 years ago
you are not playing "against" the simulator. you are playing "with" a simulator.

the definition of game is "an activity that one engages in for amusement or fun." => it does not require win-conditions. i prefer games that allow me to be creative. having lose-conditions interferes with that.

Any tips for communications with partners?

liziwizi · 5 years ago
most important is to come from a place of respect and to talk about the issue, not about the person. it should be about solving the problem together. never about pointing blame.

when i was still stuck in relationships that didn't work, most discussions were always about "who did (or did not do) what and why that was terrible". these days we talk about what problems we face, what we tried, how they didn't work and ask each other advice on how to deal with the situation.

i had to learn to be more humble and own up to my faults (that was hard). i also had to learn to reign in my temper when i was getting frustrated. (that felt impossible, but turns out to be easy when the discussions are not personally directed)

and another thing that has a huge impact on our communication: we validate, compliment or appreciate each others efforts constantly. we talk more about the good stuff than about the bad stuff, and that really makes a difference.

and lastly: allow each other personal space when needed

i know this is not really "new knowledge". every talk or tutorial about communication will tell you similar things. but it is what works for us.

I don't understand why modern society doesn't understand/want to believe that men and women have different career interests than men. Men and women value things differently, and it's not all because of society.

i hate this argument so much! it has been thrown in my face soooooooo many times... it's the go-to excuse managers and sales people use to tell a woman in IT that she's weird for doing what she does. even in teams with 90% men, it was almost never the men in the team that were the problem, but almost always those looking in on the team: managers, sales people, marketeers, project managers, journalists, ...

please, stop telling women they are weird for wanting to work in IT or for enjoying their IT job.

I am myself quite baffled as to why governments don't embrace open source to a higher degree and - more importantly - enforce open standards (no, OOXML does not count, for obvious reasons).

> The State could be an excellent digital host for itself, and a great steward for its population, if it addressed the technological matter in a professional way, with the right heart and the right mind.

Given my past experience, that's a very big if, unfortunately. :-(

Often because they don't have the required knowledge in house, so they hire consultants. And consultants will propose "safe" solutions = solutions that look good on paper and are easily defendable or quantifyable.

It's easier to defend a huge company like SAP, MS or ... than an unknown underdog. Even more so when that big corp often invites you to tech nights and similar learning opportunities whereas small opensource projects have no marketing budget to swoon, wine and dine those consultants.

Just for comparison: in Brazil the _Receita Federal_ (IRS equivalent) provides a free multi-platform* Java desktop app for filing your taxes.

The UI isn't great* and if you do complex stock trading it can be a pain to add the necessary information, but for the vast majority of people it works just fine.

It also shows if it is better to use the standard deduction or the itemized deductions for your particular case and also calculates your effective tax rate.

In fact, the Java App has for years been the only way to file personal income federal* tax. The paper forms were abolished because (almost) no one used them and they had a large rate of mistakes.

* The Java desktop app runs on Linux, macOS and Windows. (And possibly others) * There is a separate mobile app but I haven't actually used it. * In macOS there was bug in last year's version: it used ctrl instead of command for things like copy and paste. * There is no state income tax in Brazil.

I also want to brag about Tax-On-Web for Belgium. Development started over 15 years ago, it's been steadily improving over the years, it even works for linux users, it already fills in all tax details they already know (like wages)

I love it!

I know and I feel bad about it, but I have to make some compromises due to limited resources. Supporting all major operating systems is already a huge undertaking even if you use Electron.

Besides, everything seems to suggest that Firefox will be out of the market in the next couple of years. At least unless Mozilla adopts Chromium engine like Microsoft and Opera did.

"Besides, everything seems to suggest that Firefox will be out of the market in the next couple of years"

yeah, that's what they've been saying about Linux for over 15 years now. i wouldn't bet on it. we, the FOSS community, will always need a non-commercial browser that embraces the open source core values.

Boxy SVG desktop app does not and will not require recurring payments. You pay for it once and after that you will be receiving updates for free as long as I'm in charge of the project (i.e. I won't get hit by a bus or something along those lines).

hey, you might wanna change your website a little bit then. it's not obvious right now.

i clicked on the link of your site, and the first box i saw said "9$/month". that's enough to click away (for me).

only after i did some more clicking and followed an external(!) link to the store it was obvious you can do a one-time purchase.

in a normal situation i would never have gotten to that point and would have clicked away immediately after seeing 9/month for a new product that still has to prove itself and doesn't have a big name behind it.
