lez commented on Browser extension and local backend that automatically archives YouTube videos   github.com/andrewarrow/st... · Posted by u/fcpguru

It started a line of thoughts in me. What if the backend keeps the videos around for a longer period of time, and: * regularly checks youtube, and whenever one archived video gets deleted from youtube, it advertises the video ID on a specific set of Nostr relays * have a different browser extension for yt viewers that activates when the user hits a deleted video. * the backend can stream the video for continuous Bitcoin lightning payment until the stream is kept alive.

So you can make some money on free disk space.

Every Wikipedia page links to their sources. Have you tried reading those?
lez · 4 months ago
Just like the cambridge link he shared: it is a well written article with tons of references describing the source of the information.

I love these sort of things generally from a technical perspective (I kinda have these fun day-dreams of a cadre of cool nerds and geeks setting up their own commune-networks against all odds in some distant future where they just have basic infrastructure etc)...

But ultimately I always feel uneasy and reluctant to get involved in general decentralized type things as I feel like I'll just be facilitating people sharing/distributing kiddie porn.

At least with Tailscale things are "private", but with this it feels like I would be part of the wider network. Will I be using my nodes to help route CP traffic?

You must abolish all privacy from the internet, and even then, you wouldn't be able to stop CP to happen.

Good luck, Mr. Big Brother!

I think such an appliance had already been invented. They are called "trees".

All they need to do their work is corporations leaving them alone.

Seems a bit extremist. I get being mad at microsoft for trying to charge for their software (gasp). I also get being mad at Chrome for trying to monetize their software (gasp) with ads. But now if you somehow get upset at Mozilla, it's more likely that you are the problem.
lez · a year ago
According to your argument, if Gorhill gets upset at Mozilla, then Gorhill is the problem? Who is the extremist here?

Is it even possible to connect to the public Internet in a way that isn’t completely compromised by a corporation or state?

TOR is busted at this point

DNS have been MITMed

Almost all hosts are under the control of a few players who are compelled by their respective states for ubiquitous and server monitoring

Any advertised IP has to have tons of routing info and local pointers so local hosting is just as risky if not more

What are the remaining options for a free (as in speech) internet?

Nostr.

This could also be seen as a weakness. The lack of focus means fragmentation. Fragmentation means confusion. Users tend to want/need to know what to use and where to go. Telling someone, "go get an email account," will leave them asking more questions or giving up. It's a homework assignment for research. Telling someone, "go get a gmail account," is an actionable thing they can do. We made it there with email, but they were news anchors trying to explain it to people and a lot of friends helping friends, or simply ISPs setting it up for their customers. It's been 30 years of mainstream awareness.

If someone said, "I'm on Nostr," and I wanted to join them, then I found that page you linked to... now what? What is a Zap? Is this some kind of crypto nonsense? "amount in sats"... what's a sat? I just went to what was supposed to be a reddit clone and there were 0 posts. Another one is just a chess board. What is this supposed to be, the user asked? I'm already annoyed by this. "Here are 90 sites, go find the 1 that might not be a ghost town that will also let you talk to your friends." This is a bad first impression, and it's not even my first time hearing about it.

The public will never be sold on a protocol, there needs to be that one killer app that brings people in, and if the protocol is flexible to allow for more things, great.

Check primal.net to find that app you are talking about.
lez commented on Don't waste your time recycling plastic   washingtonpost.com/opinio... · Posted by u/jgwil2

The aluminum collected from aluminum drives in WW2 wasn't really used all that much, but it did make everyone feel like the war was important and that they were contributing. Similar thing with blood drives after 9/11, most of which was thrown out.

Even if recycling plastic doesn't do much (a claim I'm not certain about), it makes you think about the planet every time you throw something away. This can carry over into other behaviors, i.e. making people more adherent to recycling metal (or anything at all!), composting, reusing items, or whatever. It's important to be right about these things and not just correct.

lez · a year ago
Every time I throw away a piece of plastic in the communal bin I think about that it should have never been manifactured from plastic, but from some plant / glass / etc.

For other usecases there is an ipfilter target TARPIT, that does a similar thing on the TCP level.

This looks like my type of browser. I currently rely heavily on the vimium chrome extension.

Does this support profiles by any chance? I currently use chrome profiles to separate work and personal

Looking forward to giving it a spin

lez · 2 years ago
You can use your OS to do that: Run: `env HOME=~/nyxt-profile-work nyxt` and `env HOME=~/nyxt-profile-personal nyxt` for separating profiles.
