They have an example that calculates the expected information gained by truth booths and all of the top ones are giving more than one bit. How can this be? It is a yes/no question a max of 1 bit should be possible

Because when it's true, you also learn about any prior match ups involving those two people.

It's always fun to open the front page of HN and see a familiar face. I went to college with this guy! Congrats on shipping Mahmoud!

I actually started using Sensodyne because of the lack of SLS. I'm not in the US though.
latortuga · 4 months ago
Be careful, they add SLS to several versions of their products in the US.

Sensodyne toothpaste has two lines: one that contains a mild painkiller (Rapid Relief) and one that [claims to] repair small cracks in teeth (Repair & Protect).

I use the latter. I do not know if it works, but I use it. I have never suffered from tooth pain before or after.

I found out the hard way that my mouth really doesn't like having SLS in it because I bought the wrong version of Sensodyne once. The "Pronamel" version is the only one I'm sure doesn't have SLS.

Regular Sensodyne in other countries has novamin though, and does not have SLS. I've brought home a few tubes from traveling and it seems to work just as well as the US version - I don't get sensitivity back when using it.

Here is the experience when clicking a link on mobile:

* Page loads, immediately when I start scrolling and reading a popup trying to get tracking consent

* If I am lucky, there is a "necessary only". When unlucky I need to click "manage options" and first see how to reject all tracking

* There is a sticky banner on top/bottom taking 20-30% of my screen upselling me a subscription or asking me to install their app. Upon pressing the tiny X in the corner it takes 1-2 seconds to close or multiple presses as I am either missing the x or because there is a network roundtrip

* I scroll down a screen and get a popup overlay asking me to signup for their service or newsleter, again messing with the x to close

* video or other flashy adds in the content keep bugging me

This is btw. usually all before I even established if the content is what I was looking for, or is at any way useful to me (often it is not).

If you use AI or Kagi summarizr, you get ad-free, well-formatted content without any annoyance.

Ugh this just makes me wonder how long it will be before we start seeing responses to AI chat like "please watch this 30s ad / drink a verification can to get your answer". I have to believe that ads are coming.

I miss mozilla's XUL language (and XBL!), those were awesome.

Seems like a comment comes up about XUL every few years and I can't help but be sniped by it. A xulrunner app was my first job out of college in '08, good memories, fun dev environment!

I read something similar on Yuval Harari's Homo Sapiens, where he suggests wheat domesticated humans not the other way around. An excerpt can be found here [1]. Whole essay is great but I especially liked this part:

> The word “domesticate” comes from the Latin domus, which means “house.” Who’s the one living in a house? Not the wheat. It’s the Sapiens.

> “Improving the power coefficient of a large wind turbine by just 1% has significant impacts on the energy production of a turbine, and that translates towards the other coefficients that we derived relations for,” she said. "A 1% improvement in power coefficient could notably increase a turbine’s energy output, potentially powering an entire neighborhood."

This reminds me of the old story about being able to capture just 1% of a market to create a successful startup and how you always have to remember, there are numbers less than 1.

Live streaming is hard. Most companies that do live streaming at 2024 scale did it by learning from their mistakes. This is true for Hotstar, Amazon and even Youtube. Netflix stack is made to stream optimised, compressed , cached videos with a manageable concurrent viewers for the same video. Here we had ~65m concurrent viewers in their first live event. The compression they use, distribution etc have not scaled up well. I'll judge them based on how they handle their next live event
latortuga · a year ago
I don't think this is their first live event. They have hosted a pro golf promotional match and they had a live pro tennis match between Nadal and Alcaraz off the top of my head.
