I am all in favor of broad cannabis legalization, but there there is something to the gateway theory.

Most users of harder drugs indicate past use of marijuana. Additionally, marijuana gives many their first taste of doing business with drug dealers and 'breaks their cherry.' When they decide they want to try something else they have already gained experience locating dealers and engaging with them. Legalizing cannabis helps here because its users won't engage with dealers to score, they'll go to the store and buy a regulated product.

I agree completely that marijuana having been illegal itself affected the statistics.

But, the gateway drug idea was itself used as an argument against legalization.

"Critics have long denounced marijuana as a gateway drug to riskier substances. Some day it could be considered a life-saving one."

That denunciation only ever came from people with low life experience and oversimplified mental models of "bad".

Just curious - if we remove stop words from prompts before going to LLM, wouldn't it reduce token size? Will it keep the response from LLM same (original vs without stop tokens)?
kylecazar · 2 days ago
Search engines can afford to throw out stopwords because they're often keyword based. But (frontier) LLM's need the nuance and semantics they signal -- they don't automatically strip them. There are probably special purpose models that do this, or in certain parts of a RAG pipeline, but that's the exception.

Yeah, it'll be less input tokens if you omitted them yourself. It's not guaranteed to keep the response the same, though. You're asking the model to work with less context and more ambiguity at that point. So stripping your prompt of stopwords is going to save you negligible $ and potentially cost a lot in model performance.

All 4 of my kids are into scratch but are sort of hitting a wall doing it online, and they also have expressed interest in robotics, so I did research on the two and came up with the mBot series of robots.

For the 11 and 9 year old: the mBot Ultimate (https://www.makeblock.com/pages/mbot-ultimate-robotics-kit)

For the 7 and 5 year old: I wasnt sure whether to go with the mBot Ranger or the mBot2 Rover and went with the Rover (https://www.makeblock.com/products/buy-mbot2-rover-emo-robot)

That mBot Ultimate would have made me very happy at that age. I had a 1st gen Lego Mindstorms NXT when I was a little older than they are, it was a blast.

Hopefully adding hardware into the mix will spice things back up for them.

There are many free VPNs.
kylecazar · 3 days ago
Yeah, I guess I was thinking 15 is pretty young. Presumed a majority of minors using VPN's have a parent with a family plan.

I, of course, was not one of those people -- so maybe I shouldn't presume.

Only for VPNs whose payment methods verify that you're -ge 16

Can't seem to link the section but down this page are some options that don't require that: https://mullvad.net/en/pricing

Wow, send cash along with the token they generate (to associate with your account). That's a new one... Interesting!
