> (2) It's arguably the most valuable battleground in logistics - developing a "last mile" delivery network at scale.

How is Uber Eats any different from the many other operations strapping boxes to the backs of bicyclists? I don't see anything innovative about Uber's last mile logistics compared to Amazon (who aren't even that great) for instance.

It sounds more like an excuse Uber's leadership would make as they desperately search for profitable business.

They can be successful at it at scale because they already have a massive supply of drivers that they can allocate to rides or picking up food.

Amazon’s food delivery failed and closed last month. Caviar was sold to Doordash. Postmates is struggling.

That's not correct. $389 is its all-time high. It closed at ~$345 on Friday and opened ~$350 on Monday.
kunaalarya · 8 years ago
it's literally $325 right now so what's not correct?

FFS can we stop with the ridiculous selfies, stickers and MP3-sorting tools?

Who throws money away on these things??

i mean it's a big reason why snapchat is worth what it is today.

edit: by that i mean, it's a big reason why they got a lot of their users.

As someone that buys 80% of my clothes online, this has rarely been the case for me. I'm lucky if I can get free shipping to my home and have only experienced free return shipping, uhhhh, well not sure if I ever have.

Where do you buy your clothes? I use Gilt, Mr. Porter, and brand specific pages. My last online purchase was from sevenforallMankind where I bought a pricey pair of jeans and if I needed to return them it would have been $5 for shipping.

kunaalarya · 8 years ago
Gilt is a poor example because it's a nearly out of business discount shop. but Mr porter and most online stores will offer free shipping and returns. The exception are a lot of brand specific pages - 7formankind i always found to be really bad. But try all the hundreds of boutique web stores - i've never seen them charge for return shipping.

This is a vertical merger no? When did that stop being illegal?
kunaalarya · 8 years ago
Why would this be an illegal one? It has the potential to be a big force one day but nothing near that now and WF and grocery delivery both have lots of competition.

Snapchat? The early version of the app was literally only used by sexting teenagers in Orange County high schools.

No. That's what out of touch adults in tech thought.

The board can't force him out if he doesn't want to go, can it? (Due to his special shares) Can the company thrive with someone else running it? And will it be obvious enough for Travis to see this? (How do you fight all the local taxi commissions without a combative streak?)

I wonder if this will eventually cause companies to think twice about this type of governance.

kunaalarya · 8 years ago
They prob cant fire him but they can say that hes a big punching bag right now and bringing extra negative attention and he needs a break.

Everyone keeps forgetting that Lyft has first-mover advantage. Lyft basically created ride-sharing, Uber was a black-car company and had to play catch-up to Lyft.
kunaalarya · 8 years ago
lyft somewhat had first mover advantage in SF. Uber had first mover advantage in every other city. Uber already existed in SF and was doing black car rides and a lot of people in NY/SF knew of it - which Uber used to leapfrog Lyft's first move advantage.
