No. I got into corporate work to get away from the hell that is restaurant/retail work.

@dang, if you are reading this, can we make the black bar clickable, so it can take us to the original message that announces the passing of the deceased person?

If that is not possible, at least can we get something like, for example

  === RIP Gordon Moore ===
something along these lines of format, assuming the === is the black line?

It would help a lot.

I'll even take a text hover message. Every time the black bar is shown there are multiple questions about why its there. Seems like an easy problem to solve.

Haven't figured it out yet. I'm covered for this year. But long term I might have to go back to work, maybe not even in tech but just something easy to get the health insurance. It doesn't seem too expensive to pay out of pocket, I can probably do that too. The nuclear option is moving to Europe or Canada but you'd have to be able to get citizenship.

Dang, yea this very similar to my line of thinking when it comes to healthcare. Thanks for the response.

I got extremely burnt out at a FAANG. Then looked at my life and realized I've been missing a lot of things. No wife or kids, overweight, not many friends, only thinking about work. When I finished work I was usually too tired ti do anything. So I quit. I have enough saved up to semi-retire but without a family it'll just be a long boring vacation.

I'm in a similar position and I'm thinking of doing something similar in the coming years. But the one that is really killing my plans is health care. If you don't mind me asking, what did you do about health insurance? Or do you just have enough saved up that its not an issue?
knikes commented on Ask HN: How can mobile app developers take credit for their work?    · Posted by u/gieoon
knikes · 4 years ago
Is it not enough to do just as you said - putting the app in your portfolio (e.g. personal website) such that future prospects can see the work you've done there? Or do you feel that isn't sufficient 'proof' that you worked on it?
knikes commented on Ask HN: Joined FAANG, immediately stopped getting recruiter messages?    · Posted by u/throwaway8365

My guess is that recruiters know not to spend their time trying to recruit someone who just started a new job. I suspect you'll start seeing those emails again in ~3-6 months (around the time when people who start a new job are deciding if they really want to stay with that company), and again in ~2 years (around the time when people decide to look for new opportunities). I'm not a recruiter, so take that with a grain of salt.
knikes commented on Hello everyone I am to making a programming language and I need your help    · Posted by u/saptak123

The key features state that the language is "fast" and "occupies less memory". Maybe provide some benchmarks/comparisons? Also, more examples would be helpful.

If I look at the landing page from the perspective of someone who either wants to use the language or contribute to it, there just isn't enough compelling information yet. More examples demonstrating that the syntax could be a nice alternative to python or c would help catch someone's eye.

knikes commented on Ask HN: How did you recover from a burnout?    · Posted by u/ent101
knikes · 5 years ago
Scheduled an immediate week off with no regard for current work in progress, and during that week forbade myself from any thoughts of work. Each day I felt a little bit better, and by the time I got back I was in the right frame of mind to continue working.

Few disclaimers though:

- My company puts high emphasis on mental health, so I recognize that I have the "luxury" of being able to immediately take vacation time without warning, something not practical for everyone.

- The last two jobs I had quit was due to burnout, and I didn't want to make that mistake again. So my vacation was a bit preemptive, in that I was noticing signs of burnout and decided to take action before I hit the point of no return.

knikes commented on Ask HN: How to find motivation for personal projects after work?    · Posted by u/cheb

For me, working on a project that I feel has a high potential for success gives me the 'motivation energy' to continue writing code after already having spent hours writing code at work. It just doesn't work for me if I'm not working on something motivating.

For me, I've started feeling like I'm close to burnout. But quitting doesn't really seem like a helpful option.

Could I actually take months off recovering? No. I'd have to immediately start leetcoding and remembering what all those trees are for so that I could become employed again later on. And risk having to take a job that pays way less than before.

Which brings me to my main point: I don't see an option where the work ever actually truly ends. There's always more. Always things I need to be doing. And until I have enough to retire, I have to keep grinding.

Vacation doesn't help. It just puts me farther behind.

I hate this so much. I spent three months leetcoding and doing mock interviews to pass the interview and get hired into a FAANG company. After deciding to leave the company after a few years, I went straight into interviewing instead of doing prep first thinking it would be a breeze. I bombed. I could tell from my interviewer's faces that they were questioning the validity of my resume due to how badly I was doing.

I eventually went on to get hired by another company that asked me to solve a small problem prior to the interview and discuss my approach, which went very well. I couldn't bring myself to go practice whiteboarding binary search again.
