This is missing the largest argument in my opinion. The weights are the derivative work of the GPL licensed code and should therefore be released under the GPL. I would say these companies release their weights or simply not train on copyleft code.

It is truly amazing how many people will shill for these massive corporations that claim they love open source or that their AI is open while they profit off of the violation of licenses and contribute very little back.

klaustopher · a year ago
Just FYI, Felix Reda was a member of the European Parliament and was responsible there for the copyright reform and also involved in GDPR, massively stepping on the feet of big tech. Don't know if it was your intention to include them in a list of people wo "shill" for big tech, but they shouldn't be included.

edit wording about the shill

Is there people who really enjoy music generated by AI ? I guess there always is an audience for poorly made things or poor quality things like industrial food with low quality ingredients.

Or maybe it’ll become so good it replaces artists altogether but what’s the point of it all ? In a way, future generations might only know this new world where music is generated by machines and won’t be shocked ?

My take is that, music is so deeply rooted within us that even if AI can generate it, it’ll never replace the human experience and it might even push music made by humans to be a luxury and be more expensive. In a way it’s a good thing for artists if money goes in their pockets, on the other hand it might severed a part of the population who will not have access to culture anymore. Or there might be more piracy but it might kill the artist way of living and their music in the process.

I though about more concerts and all, but as of today, I find it difficult and expensive to assist concerts from where I live. I requires many hours of travel, even taking hotels which makes the experience out of reach if required a few times a month.

My brother in law is a musician but he’s never been able to make a living out of it. They performed in places but in order to live and support his family he need a job which made it harder to live of his craft.

I’m curious to see which positive change this will bring

Personally, I enjoy the fact that it's generating songs about topics I'd find it funny to have a song about. My dog playing with their friends, a song about a funny situation that happened. So it's mostly the part about hearing something that's personal to me being put into a song. I'll listen to it a few times, send it around and be done with it. It'll never go into my daily-listening queue, will not replace the emotional connection I have with songs that helped me through bad times. It's just a fun tool to make something "personal" that I'd never ever would hire an artist for anyways.

No, unfortunately it's not possible to set a custom URL... OpenAI is either hard coded or using a configuration option that isn't exposed.

> To me that's a really weird analogy. Nobody would think about putting a gasoline tank and pump in their garage

That's because we don't need to. ICE is predicated on filling up every 1-4 weeks. EV is predicated on charging overnight.

> There's plenty of public charging infrastructure in Europe. Fast charging on the highways, slow charging in living areas.

But..where do you charge overnight? That's what the previous poster is saying. If you can't afford it, or you live in an apartment, what then?

klaustopher · a year ago
You leave your car parked outside at a slow 22kW charger. But with a full BEV, you don't need to charge every night, just like you don't need to fill up your gasoline car every evening in your own garage.

>That's crazy to me, gasoline is so much more expensive than electricity, why wouldn't people charge the batteries more often?

Of course any sane person would want to charge their car electrically. So I can only imagine that the inability to do so is the problem.

My guess would be because many people can't. In most European cities having a dedicated place to charge your car is not affordable to most people. Which is one reason manufacturers targeted their BEVs at the higher end, the population who has a garage and can install a charger there.

To me that's a really weird analogy. Nobody would think about putting a gasoline tank and pump in their garage ... There's plenty of public charging infrastructure in Europe. Fast charging on the highways, slow charging in living areas. Even many supermarkets offer fast chargers now, so that during your grocery shopping trip you can get most of your charging needs covered. There's plenty of opportunities to charge your vehicle over night, or really quickly when needed. It's absolutely possible to own an EV without a garage

In Germany you get tax benefits when buying a plugin hybrid instead of a pure gasoline car ... There's always been the legend that people return their leased PHEVs and the charging cable is still wrapped in plastic in the trunk and has never been used. Maybe there's some truth to this after all.

Interesting to see some individuals and seemingly individual police officers fined. I know it was theoretically possible but I wonder what the stories are there.
klaustopher · a year ago
At least for Germany there are cases, where police officers have leaked information about people that they have access to through their systems. Especially leaking data about political opponents to certain groups.
