kharms commented on U.S. Capitol Locked Down Amid Escalating Protests   npr.org/sections/congress... · Posted by u/fortran77

Millions marched for women's rights, millions marched for gay rights, millions marched for voters rights, millions marched for democracy.

Now this desperate man called for protest, and what did he get? Thousands.

It's a tough moment for our nation, but I am reassured. First the people, then the courts, then the states, now congress and the Vice President have all repudiated Trump's dictatorial aspirations.

I was briefly considering buying an iphone for the first time ever, since I wanted a good camera phone. Scratched that idea when I learned that it didn't have an audio jack.

There is a little 3.5mm-to-lightning dongle that came with at least the iPhone 7. Not sure if it comes with the current model, but FYI.

This is anecdotal and it might come across as bitter and tonedeaf as someone who is not in a STEM job and cant see the bigger picture very well. Im a diesel engine tech who repairs those big trucks carrying food and shit tickets to grocery stores. the fact that ANY market is completely detached from whats actually happening to Americans is frustrating.

My job just cut benefits and hours but we're "essential." Remember those $1200 checks? Im still waiting on mine. Lenders and banks were supposed to start going easy on loans but ive had two emails and a phone call about the loan for my Silverado this month and wouldnt you know, the caller was excited to mention my stimulus check.

A guy who used to be my bartender now couch surfs a few days a week at my place while he looks for work. His mother is getting evicted from an assisted living center in a few days and his girlfriend is sick. She 'works at the Amazon' so she cant take any time off, but hes hoping if he gets a job at the Flying J at the edge of town he can switch places with her and she can take a few days off.

Shops are closing and nobody seems to care. Ive counted 2 furniture stores, a consignment shop, a few barber shops, and half the god damn bars in this town including one that was burned to the ground "mysteriously" over the last two weeks. Someone spray painted a swastika on the late night pizza joint.

So yeah this is a recession but it is so much worse than a lot of people think. No school means poor kids roam the street like packs of feral dogs asking for money for food around here. Half the country is out of work and the best Bloomberg can come up with is "its the start of a recession dont you know!"

You probably know this, but worth saying just in case: you should look into unemployment assistance. I believe that the CARES Act applies in case of reduced employment, and the $600/wk benefit is always given in full.

kharms commented on Amazon scooped up data from its own sellers to launch competing products   wsj.com/articles/amazon-s... · Posted by u/benryon

What really is the issue? That Amazon is leveraging its success to be successful? It's unfair that Amazon is able to see that a product category is doing well so it invests its own money into manufacturing a product to sell through its site?

Do you really think that if Amazon couldn't use the data from its own site that it wouldn't procure it elsewhere? Before any product is developed there is extensive market research done to get an idea of how much money this product could make.

Anyone can and does do this, why should Amazon be punished that its data collection mechanism is cheaper than others?

>What really is the issue? That Amazon is leveraging its success to be successful?

The issue is that over the long term, Amazon is lowering the ROI on innovating and taking risks in the consumer goods space. It's able to do this because of its dominance as a marketplace.

There are plenty of people with real allergies and real intolerances. There are also plenty of people who don't have any allergy or intolerance and convince themselves they do. Those people make it harder for those that have real allergies and intolerances.
kharms · 6 years ago
Alternatively, they are people that pay attention to their bodies and have intolerances that aren't strong enough to warrant a medical diagnosis but still make them feel shitty.

I'm also skeptical of the idea that they make it harder for people with "real" intolerances - in the gluten example, there's been an explosion of GF foods, products, and menu signage ever since "gluten intolerance" became a familiar phrase.

Such an American thing to do. Joke's on them though: These Chinese masks are often defective.

France blocked the export of (purchased) masks to Switzerland, and other nations.

The thing is, though, Covid-19 doesn't cause coughing in asymptomatic cases.

I had no cough before developing fever and muscle pains, and only a very mild cough afterwards. Are you suggesting that asymptomatic cases are not infectious?

Likewise, according to the article, "nobody there was coughing or sneezing".
