Git is like 10% of building software.

If GitHub is doing 90% more than Git does, "GitHub" is a terrible name for it.

Who cares? Nobody is concerned about that. They're concerned no one will be able to fix stuff when it goes wrong, or there will be no one to blame for really bad problems. Especially when the problem is repeating at 50 petaflops per second.

Can we please demand that Github provide mirror APIs to competitors? We're just asking for an extinction-level event. "Oops, our AI deleted the world's open source."

Any public source code hosting service should be able to subscribe to public repo changes. It belongs to the authors, not to Microsoft.

No, we can't. Hence Git. Use it the right way, or prepare for the fallout. Anyone looking for a good way to prepare for that, I suggest Git.

Take it away from Microsoft. Not sure how this isn't an antitrust issue anyway.
kgwxd · 11 hours ago
That's on every individual that decided to "give it" to Microsoft. Git was made precisely to make this problem go away.

There are times in which the term "thought terminating cliche" itself can be the seen as the culprit.

To use an example from the article, if I were to say "Let people enjoy things", and you were to denounce that as a TTC without consideration of my true intent.

In that case you may inadvertently be the one that shuts down the debate prematurely, and I may have actually had a valid perspective.

If someone invokes TTC against a TTC honestly, they're asking the speaker to think about what they just said. The opposite of a terminating thought. If that same person just wants someone to shut up, they'll say "shut up".

What’s an equivalent movie in contemporary times? Not pretentious, sincere and relies on dialogue and story telling?

I kind of hated movies like Manchester By The Sea, American Sniper, Banshees of Insherin.

They all feel not so sincere to me. There’s something about them - a technique where audience exposition is deliberately toned down to such an extent that it’s just scene after scene with no soul.

Not pretentious? That movie was the first thing I thought of the day I learned the meaning of the word.

You may very well be! Why?

It's good for a single watch. I don't get how people can rewatch it without groaning non-stop. We get it, he's smarter than the warden and the warden hates him for it, prison sucks, and Morgan Freeman can make even the lamest cliches sound "deep".

This is one of my favorite movies, yet it won 0 Oscars (nominated for 7) and was a box office flop (cost $25M to make and box office proceeds were $28M). It only gained popularity after the theatres from the VHS rental market.

I firmly believe part of the initial commercial failure was because of the title. With something more descriptive like, "Escape from Shawshank" or just "Prison Break" people would have been more interested to see it.

Everyone would have expected an action movie and been even more disappointed. I loved the movie as a teenager, but as an adult, it's feels like a kids movie. I remember liking it, that's pretty much all that's interesting about it. Nothing else holds up.

When I was six, a cousin about to leave for college gave me his 2600, my first console.

With it came not one, but two (!) copies of E.T. So I had a backup in case I accidentally dropped one in a pit or sinkhole…

Or double the pleasure of intentionally throwing it in a pit or sinkhole...
