New accounts on issues like this always make me wary of the 50cent party (kind of a case-in-point example of the kind of nation state influence operations and risk). [0]

It shouldn’t have gotten to this level, but it’s where we are. Users will move to reels or something else that takes its place without the national security risk.

yeah i found it noteworthy that your comment had mostly green user replies. thanks for sharing this, i didn't know about the 50 cent party.

Apple is a company, and it’s interested in making profits. Right now, its methods of making profits are slightly more aligned with what privacy conscious users desire than some other companies’, and that’s good.

Apple absolutely needs to be checked in other ways—-the fact that it’s selling advertising while setting policies that hurt other advertisers stinks to high heaven. Let antitrust rake them over the coals for that.

It's easy to simplify this to NFTs are a grift.

They are simple pointers to URLs.

They have no inherent value

They do not qualify as ownership of the resource

They are as much cryptocurrency related as Git. (I.e. they reside in a Blockchain.) No more than that.

Stay well away from them, they are a scam and a grift.

also stay well away from milk. you don't need it.

file this under reaction videos. he's reacting to the hype. this is no different than saying "the problem with YC" and only focusing on the last 5 batches.

People don't believe me when I say how much DNS matters. So I wrote a song about it.

There's a lot of good content in this article focused on the media. The media is highly visible and well-documented, so it makes sense.

I'd like to see more content about indoctrination and propaganda happening in US education. This to me is much more insidious as it takes an impressionable populace (kids and young adults) and provides an authority figure (teachers and professors) that are largely hidden from public view and gives them a lot of room to provide whatever narrative they like about politics, history, or just about any subject.

The impact of shouting matches happening on cable news and Twitter seem like a rounding error compared to the decades-long indoctrination that happens during one's education.

100% i think it was peter thiel who i heard say something to the effect of “if 90% of the most recent supreme court justices went to hardvard/yale, you have to ask yourself what are they teaching there?”

and on the other side, i witnessed what the chicago public school system says to the kids (remote learning) and holy shit. it was like something from 1984. gotta start preparing us to not own anything and like it some time…..

A tad late but I missed this before. You're spot on, we (ironically) didn't do a good job at explaining our own game haha.

I think it's roughly: "It's hard to find docs -> A filter on your browser history helps a lot"

kevando · 4 years ago
wow what a great post! i think you totally nailed it. the KEY to a funny imorov scene is the normal base reality. there’s like one joke before matt foley comes out of the basement. you nailed this with your observation, yeah finding my docs is a pain. and it’s super important not to derail from your game. key and peele are the masters of this. substitute teacher is literally one joke over and over and it’s hilarious. they’re also masters of the unusual thing. that’s where i might challenge you with eesl. a search bar in browser extension is not unusual.

This kind of walled garden in the 80s led to apple losing ground to microsoft and a chant for developers, developers, developers.

Microsoft was forced to provide options for multibrowsers and limit it's paint application from competing with photo editing software.

All of your problems are solved with opt-in to secondary app sources. If you want the apple approved walled garden, don't install the alternative and retain all the benefits of percieved security.

What's wrong with letting people install a different app store, and apps? Was firefox worse than internet explorer?

kevando · 5 years ago
Great point. Now consider what browser came after Firefox. This is what Apple wants to prevent.
