Or save a bookmark in your browser and edit its destination to be this Javascript bookmarklet to let you load the archive.is version of any URL you're currently on without even needing to remember the domain or type anything:

  javascript:void(location.href='https://archive.is/?run=1&url='+encodeURIComponent(location.href))
Or version for IA's Wayback Machine instead:

  javascript:void(window.open('https://web.archive.org/web/*/'+location.href))
(The archive.is one takes you to it in the same tab, while the wayback machine one opens a new one - because personally I use the former when I can't load a page, so don't need that tab kept open, and use the W.M. for comparing current to old versions of the page. But it should be fairly self-explanatory how to swap one URL with the other if you prefer it differently.)

Or this more complicated version of the Wayback Machine one, which if you click while on an empty tab will instead give you an alert with a text field in which to type or paste whatever URL you want to look up:

  javascript:(function()%7Bif(location.href.indexOf('http')!=0)%7Binput=prompt('URL:','https://');if(input!=null)%7Blocation.href='http://web.archive.org/web/*/'+input%7D%7Delse%7Blocation.href='http://web.archive.org/web/*/'+location.href;%7D%7D)();

Thank you, that's so convenient!

This is great, and I wish it existed for Reddit too (or maybe it does already?). There’s so much good content that’s a bit hard to find now, plus it would be very interesting to see what people were talking about at a specific point in time.

> In July, a Waymo in Tempe, Arizona, braked to avoid hitting a downed branch, leading to a three-car pileup.

> In August, a Waymo at an intersection “began to proceed forward” but then “slowed to a stop” and was hit from behind by an SUV.

> In October, a Waymo vehicle in Chandler, Arizona, was traveling in the left lane when it detected another vehicle approaching from behind at high speed. The Waymo tried to accelerate to avoid a collision but got hit from behind.

It’s worth noting that all 3 of these incidents involve a Waymo getting hit from behind, which is the other driver’s fault even if the Waymo acted “unexpectedly”. This is very very good news for them.

That last one is impressive, most humans probably wouldn’t pull it off. And just imagine when all the cars on the road are self-driving, probably none of these accidents would’ve happened.

Could a better-designed review or reputation system on Couchsurfing have stopped this guy quicker? Feels like he should've been kicked from the platform the first time it happened.

Apparently he did get kicked eventually, but he just made a new account. Definitely sounds like Couchsurfing could have done better.

My ears ring when I yawn. Does anyone else get that?
jmckib · 2 years ago
Yep same here, and I don’t have tinnitus. Sometimes I seem to get it temporarily though, for unclear reasons.

It seems clear that there weren’t specific reasons, just a kind of final straw in the product announcements that made the board realize how far from the original mission the company had drifted.

Turning it into an emergency and surprise coup with innuendo of wrongdoing looks to have been a huge mistake, and may result in total loss of control where a more measured course correction could have succeeded.

Does the board not have final control? Why have they agreed (in principle) to step down? I wish more of the reporting around this was specific about who has the power to do what.

If there is one issue republicans are able to gain widespread support on its crime.
jmckib · 2 years ago
Honest question, is there any evidence that Republican politicians are more effective at fighting crime? Or are you just saying that’s the public’s perception?

It's not an accident that the cops don't stop this...crime grows wherever law enforcement stops, and they's been playing this game for hundreds of years.
jmckib · 2 years ago
The article says that overall crime is actually down in LA this year.
