Man, its too much effort to explore this actual Earth and see as much as possible. I can't even fathom the energy and commitment needed to explore a virtual Earth like planet however awesome it sounds. How do you guys stay committed to something like this?
jimcsharp · a year ago
Seeing as much of a virtual planet as possible costs $60 and it uses the same energy that isn't being used because the other thing costs thousands of dollars.

I usually just explain things again, and again, and document, and coach, and the project gets a bit slower, and the world doesn't end. Maybe I'm super dumb though - nobody tell me.

Interestingly a lot of the larger philanthropic organizations are just as administration heavy as the US government and suffer from the same mission creep and the same obfuscated, bureaucratic decision making process, etc. Not to mention the leadership is often richly compensated (i.e. $1M in salary) and non-elected.

In fact we should probably celebrate gifts to the US government more than we do.

My hunch is that taxes are the most efficient 'charity', even with the bloat, and everyone's too busy sniffing farts in their corner to see it.

AFAICT there is no way to set this on a Chromebook though - and since Chrome is embedded into the OS using Firefox is really painful in comparison. I guess I will have to use uBO Lite.

edit: There is apparently a way to set it by enabling Developer Mode, but Developer Mode is itself really annoying - it shows a popup screen every boot.

jimcsharp · 2 years ago
I've been running ad blockers for 15 years now at least, but I seem to recall really annoying pop-ups being a part of Internet advertising too, and they happen more than once per boot.

Call summary is such a good feature. How many times has your wife snapped her fingers for you to jot something down when she's on the phone with the pediatrician? you go crazy looking for a pen or something

This is why I love my pixel. They build stuff that affects my life day to day. My biggest vote of confidence: since buying my wife a pixel, I've had zero tech support requests. it really just works.

jimcsharp · 2 years ago
I can't record calls but Google can? Gross.
jimcsharp commented on Australia starts peanut allergy treatment for babies   bbc.com/news/articles/c0x... · Posted by u/peutetre
rconti · 2 years ago
What's the implication here? That exposure to peanuts in utero might not help avoid peanut allergies after birth? (I'm not sure what the literature on that says)

Or that there's something unusual about simply being in Australia as an infant that causes peanut sensitivity?

Or that infants in Australia have less exposure to nuts?

jimcsharp · 2 years ago
I read at one point that my oral allergy syndrome, my mild reaction to apples and other fruits, tends to be correlated with hay fever. It doesn't seem unreasonable for something similar to be afoot with peanuts.

Most streaming services through web browsers do not allow streaming greater than 720p unless you install a separate desktop app with heavy DRM protection. They do not want people ripping the 4K feed for piracy. I wish there was a way to emulate the hardware decryption on streaming devices
jimcsharp · 2 years ago
Very clever. Keep the highest quality files out of the hands of those grubby pirates. Then the customers will have no choice but to subscribe so they can watch the content in 720p.

Why do professional software developers use Visual Studio in the first place?

To make just a bunch of money.

Surely it's overkill to pay for a whole month of constant vpn use. You could cook something up that provides access for a short session aaand we've circled back to dialers.

What would you have needed to understand about risk and emotions to have retired in your mid twenties?
jimcsharp · 2 years ago
Performing formalized risk assessments can provide you with insights about a risk you're thinking about taking. I think it helped me take the right risks and leave the workforce early.

Emotionally? Just* ignore them and pursue the thing that pays you the most. It's boring and it's unhealthy and it's hard and it's not romantic.
