jetbalsa commented on I’m joining OpenAI   steipete.me/posts/2026/op... · Posted by u/mfiguiere

There’s plenty of straightforward reasons why OpenAI would want to do this, it doesn’t need to be some sort of malicious conspiracy.

I think it’s good PR (particularly since Anthropics actions against OpenCode and Clawdbot were somewhat controversial) + Peter was able to build a hugely popular thing & clearly would be valuable to have on the team building something along the lines of Claude Cowork. I would expect these future products to be much stronger from a security standpoint.

I suspect Anthropic was seeing a huge spike of concurrent model usage at a too fast of a rate that claude code just doesn't do, CC is rather "slow" at api calls per minute. Also lots and lots of cache, the sheer amount of cache that claude does is insane.

It's a story in Germany all the time that some open source zealots get a town government to switch to an off-brand office suite which is so bad that the government worker's union goes on strike to get Microsoft Office back.
jetbalsa · 13 days ago
Which one did they switch to?

Sure, Betamax was technically superior to VHS. But in the end the market still decides… nobody said “better” means technically superior… just something people want to use an other options available to them. “Good enough” with attractive value to the individual/business typically wins.
jetbalsa · 22 days ago
Not to get too much into a debate about Beta vs VHS, but VHS did have longer run times and its cheapness was the main reason it won, It just fit better for the consumer overall desires at the time

I've never actually tested what happens if you ignore the "steering input required" nags from LKAS. Does it truly keep driving at cruise control speed? I assumed it would eventually slow to a stop.

As for the safety feature. I inherited (literally) a second car that's 10 years older than the primary one. You get used to LKAS. I was driving a long distance in the older one while somewhat overtired and had several rumble strip excursions that would not have happened in the LKAS-equipped car. And for the asleep guy in the parent post, it may have made the difference between still being alive and dead in head-on collision or rollover.

My 2021 Toyota corolla will fault out and stop steering for you.

Effectively no one was using XSLT at any point (certain document pipelines or Paul Ford like indie hackers being the exceptions that proved the rule). Browsers keep all kinds of legacy features, of course, and they could well have kept this one, and doing so would’ve been a decision with merit. But they didn’t, and the market will ratify their decision. Just like effectively no one was using XSLT, effectively no one will change their choice of browser over its absence.

Blizzard used to use it for their entire WoW Armory website to look people up, They converted off it years ago, but for awhile they used XML/XSLT to display the entire page

You aren't comparing Linux to anything here.

Windows has recently been a complete shitshow - so even if Linux hasn't gotten any better (it has) it is now likely better than fiddling around with unfucking Windows, and Windows doing things like deleting all your files.

jetbalsa · 2 months ago
You can put some work into windows to slim it down some, a unattended generator to turn most of the crap off on install, then Shutup OO goes a long way

Right, it IS nvidia's fault at this point, but its still like what? 90% of the consumer GPU market.

Gaming works fine with exception of things like BF6 that require kernel level anti cheat.

The one thing I haven’t been able to get working reliably is steam remote play with the Linux machine as host. Most games work fine, others will only capture black screens.

jetbalsa · 2 months ago
if you are running KDE you can whitelist Steam for remote desktop work, this is because of wayland.

Gaming now works better on Linux than it does on Windows. This must be upsetting for Microsoft, but it was their game to lose.
jetbalsa · 2 months ago
This still has a "sometimes" on it, there are more then a few games that need magic proton flags to run well, nothing you can't go look up on protondb, but lots of games you would want to play with friends might have some nasty anti-cheat on it that just won't let you play it at all.

Because Linux not an OS. The flagship OSS OS is Ubuntu, and it's mostly pretty stable. But OSS inherently implies the ability to make your own OS that's different from someone else's OS, so a bunch of people did just that.
jetbalsa · 2 months ago
Is it the flagship of Linux Distros right now? I though RHEL (The most common to see paid software package for) would be up there, along side its offshoots of Rocky / Fedora
