jericho_jones commented on Bicyclist pisses everyone off by ‘legally’ riding in the street (2020)   nypost.com/video/bicyclis... · Posted by u/kitkat_new

Why is "legally" in quotes? That's the way you're supposed to ride a bike. Where dedicated bike infrastructure doesn't exist, you have to use the street, and this is the safest way to do so. If you want bikers off the streets (which you should), build biking infrastructure.

In NZ (and probably elsewhere) it is against the law to impede the flow of traffic. Specifically if travelling slower than the speed limit you need to pull over and let other people pass.

Its a fine of ~$150, but hardly enforced.

Dead Comment

Is it me, or do the protanopia (top right) and deuteranopia (bottom left) images look identical? If I’m colour-blind this would be a weird way to find out.

I found a setting in chrome the other day that allows you to simulate the 3 types mentioned in the article.

Seems like there is more variation in chromes filters than the ones shown in the article.

BTW they look the same to me too.

In chrome: console > rendering > emulate vision deficiencies

I suppose this is actually representing the most famous people in the -western world's lens- rather than the most famous people to each country respectively. For example, Haruki Murakami is a Japanese author, very famous in the west because their books have been translated into English. But would they be the most famous person from Kyoto to people in Japan?

That's something that's always fascinated me about the internet, it's essentially delineated by language and not country. If you google things in Spanish, you get the spanish web. If you google things in Japanese, you get the Japanese web. For a subtle example of this, there's very little crossover between Japanese memes and English memes, it's a whole different web. Japanese web design is also famously different to western web design, it's formed it's own set of UX expectations and principles.

More likely a search or wiki index.

Eg. Phil Collins isn't shown in favour of a cricketer from the early 20th century?

Sometimes things are imperfect, not racist.

Check out ACMI in Fed Square. They have a section of the "story of the moving image" exhibition on the evolution of video games (https://www.acmi.net.au/story-of-the-moving-image/videogames...).

AFAIR it's not exactly "consoles in display cases" like at powerhouse, but they probably don't have the kit

jericho_jones commented on Wealthy mortgage borrowers face cold shoulder from lenders   bloomberg.com/news/articl... · Posted by u/aazaa

Wealthy Borrower: "Why can't I refi lower?"

Lender: "No, because your loan isn't secured by the government"

Wealthy Borrower: "I am just using logic here, you're telling me a riskier borrower with lower credit than me can refi?"

Lender: "If their loan is secured by the government, yes"

Wealthy Borrower: "I don't understand"

Lender: "Well at least we agree on something"

Are you really using logic? Seems like a dubious claim to me. Capitalism is a harsh mistress Mr.1%. Don't like it move to Denmark.

I’m not being sarcastic. The two countries I have experience with are the Netherlands and Japan, and the cost is 0 and the equivalent of $1.5, regardless of the amount withdrawn, respectively.

In the Netherlands I think I pay a $3 monthly fee for the privilege of having an account, but Japan is free.

jericho_jones · 6 years ago
In Australia and New Zealand other-bank ATM withdrawal fees are $2. International withdrawals depend on where you are but 3% or $5 (whichever is larger) is common. This is additional to whatever forex rate they give you.

It's only recently that newer banks are removing these fees.

However, accounts are generally free.
