You could also put in about the same amount of effort and do something much more environmentally conscious at the expense of being less childishly subversive. I guess you’ve gotta decide if that tradeoff is worth it.

I wouldn't say they were being childishly subversive -- it is very unclear that paper bags are better than plastic bags for the environment.

"Manufacturing a paper bag takes about four times as much energy as it takes to produce a plastic bag"

"Studies have shown that, for a paper bag to neutralize its environmental impact compared to plastic, it would have to be used anywhere from three to 43 times."

True, but... for a public institution that leans left to give in to pressure from the right is going to mean the right thinks they can push that institution around with pressure. It's to open the door to a lot more pressure.

Of course, the right way out of this dilemma is to, once it's brought to your attention, ignore the pressure but handle it like you should have handled it, and with public statements of status. "We are aware of the allegations. We have formed an independent committee to investigate. Until that investigation terminates, we have no further statement." And then a public statement when it has terminated. And so on. Then you're doing the right thing, but not responding to pressure.

It is very confusing to me how this got painted as pressure solely from the right. Ackman seemed like the driving force behind it, and he has mostly donated to democrats: "Since 1998, with few exceptions to select Republicans, Ackman has mainly donated to Democratic election candidates. Ackman has donated more than $600,000 to Democratic campaigns"

To me your selection is reversed.

If you hate ads so much you're prepared to pay fb to get rid of it, I don't believe you're one to click on them.

jaybaxter · 2 years ago
There is a type of advertising called "brand advertising" where the goal is more about brand awareness (e.g. think of a Coca-Cola superbowl ad) than "direct response advertising". Such advertisers don't really care if you click on ads, but they still want to reach high-value users.

The article repeatedly makes effort to assure the reader that the left/right dichotomy wasn't hardcoded but instead "emergently" appeared, then never goes into any detail about how that happened exactly...

It's weird to me that the left right divide happened to appear, rather than a faith based/non faith based, or an authoritarian/liberal, etc dichotomy. Is there no public data on this we can use to prove it's true, just trusting the org at it's word?

The code is open source: https://github.com/twitter/communitynotes

The notes and rating data is released to the public every day: https://twitter.com/i/communitynotes/download-data

Feel free to run the matrix factorization code on the data, and then try to interpret the resulting latent dimension it finds for yourself! And also, you can read the code to verify that it really is running a matrix factorization rather than hardcoding a particular left/right split.

I don't know if community notes takes this into account, but you could weight bias according to how a contributor has voted in the past and medianize the output to prevent "dogpiling" or "brigading" from one side or the other.
jaybaxter · 2 years ago
Indeed, it does this!

>For a note to achieve a high intercept term (which is the note’s helpfulness score), it must be rated helpful by raters with a diversity of viewpoints (factor embeddings)

Having worked at Cruise it's the last place I'd recommend to someone who's burned out.
