Don't forget that electric vehicles are almost silent.

Not when moving at any significant speed - most of the sound of a vehicle going faster than 10mph ish is tires.

I think this will make for an excellent litmus test for companies that make wifi products. Is this a critical fix? No. Is it important, if not critical? Yes.

Some vendors aren't going to care about this in the least and won't offer any updates.

Some will only fix this in new and future devices.

And perhaps some will update all their devices going back several years.

Currently I buy used 802.11ac Airport Extremes for wireless for people because they're simple, they stay out of the way, and the last time there was a major update, Apple updated every Airport model all the way back to the Airport Express from 2008.

But I want to be able to buy new wifi devices, and how vendors handle this will inform me about which ones I'll buy going forward.

As far as I can tell Apple has not released an update for my Airport Express since 2018 :/

Why is it on me, the consumer, to worry about unethical palm oil sourcing?
jakob223 · 6 years ago
It's on everyone. But our political and economic systems don't encourage the producers to care about the ethics of their products unless the consumers care.

Now we can have audiobooks read by anyone we like!

They can direct us to our destination!

They can speak at our funeral, being long dead themselves (as long as there is sufficient training material recorded).

The future is awesome.

The emphasis on a lot of these sentences is all wrong; I wouldn't want to listen to an audiobook by this engine. It's still super impressive/terrifying though.
jakob223 commented on A Landmark Climate Trial Turns on Whether Exxon Cooked the Books   bloomberg.com/news/featur... · Posted by u/pseudolus

And what do these people think would have happened if Exxon had made their findings public? Everyone would have dropped everything and suddenly stopped using oil? How many other companies factor in climate change when valuing their assets? (none) I have nothing but contempt for these activists who try to blame corporations instead of recognizing that it is their own desire for modern convenience that creates demand for oil.
jakob223 · 6 years ago
If Exxon and all the other fossil fuel companies had not spent large sums of money to suppress climate research, perhaps we would have started moving away from fossil fuels and become concerned about climate change sooner, or be more concerned about the impending climate catastrophe.

Unless I missed it in TFA, it doesn't say that the raw materials (the meat) are more expensive but rather that the product is more expensive. If a fast food chain can charge more for cheaper materials, that's a double win for them.

I imagine that that difference is going mostly to recoup R&D costs at e.g. Impossible right now, who is making the patties.

The only entity that benefits from this is a massive corporation. There is no benefit to individual humans or the public at large.

How do you feel about providing free marketing for Big Pineapple (Dole)?

jakob223 · 6 years ago
Pineapples are fun! I for one appreciate the encouragement to purchase fruit more often

Where is the audio coming from? If that was computer manufactured that was pretty good because it sounded very natural
jakob223 · 7 years ago
Most of the examples in the video they had the subject record the audio separately from the generated video. In one or two of them they cite some audio-generating thing.
