Hi zoogeny (and anyone else here) — you can try our new app Nim to address the Runway problems you describe https://alpha.nim.video

We offer both image-to-video (same situation as Runway, need a few attempts to make something awesome) and video-to-video (under the name "Restyle 2.0") - this is our newest tool and is highly reliable, i.e. you can get complex motion (kissing, handshakes, boxing, skateboarding, etc) with controllable changes to input video (changing outfits, characters, backgrounds, styles).

Unlike Runway and Kling, we currently offer a smiple UNLIMITED plan for just $10/mo. Check it out! https://alpha.nim.video

What's the maximum video dimensions your service can output? with a 1024x1024 image it exports 512x512 on the free plan.
j0ej0ej0e commented on UK pulls back from clash with Big Tech over private messaging   ft.com/content/770e58b1-a... · Posted by u/alwillis

I don't really like the headline, it makes it sound negative.

Big Tech tends to have negative connotations, nowadays. So, here the FT is trying to say that a democratically elected government is living in fear of private firms.

While it may be true that our government are now living in fear of not just Big Tech but all types of Big whatever, the fight was way beyond just big tech. Sure Big Tech helped but it still is a badly written and badly thought out think-about-the-children type law that was being fought by everyone not just big tech.

I didn't bother to read the article. Headlines are important There are other things to rage about Big Tech, this is not the one.

j0ej0ej0e · 2 years ago
lol the uk gov has more negative connotations than bigtech.

Also not quite democratic when the uk electorate last voted for a gov in 2019 but we have had 3 prime ministers since all with vastly different strategies, where the last 2 were chosen by anyone who wants to pay for a membership to the tory party, including fake identities made by journalists who registered from france.

If you had some context, bigtech are actually fighting to keep encryption alive and are the goodies in this story.

Context is important, so is reading. But thanks for your insight in the article you didn't read.

I see a few comments suggesting a change of government will help.

The previous Labour government (1997-2010) introduced the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regulation_of_Investigatory_...), which amongst other provisions includes key disclosure rules (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Key_disclosure_law#United_Ki...). The burden of proof in key disclosure is inverted (the accused must prove non-possession of the key or inability to decrypt), which was somewhat controversial amongst people who cared at the time (activation, i.e. actual use if RIPA III provisions, began in 2007).

The same Labour Government ran the Interception Modernisation Programme (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interception_Modernisation_P...) (you may recognise this or "mastering the internet" from the Snowden leaks, although IMP was not a secret) and proposed legislation to enact part of it: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communications_Data_Bill_200.... This never made it into law.

I think Labour are on board with this, and the senior civil service (those at the top levels who work with ministers or close to those who do) don't change in the same way US administrations do. It might be the case that this bill runs out of time in the current parliament and is not picked up by the next government (this can happen even if the same political party holds office) but the idea will be back in some form one way or another and I suspect will make it into law.

Given Labour also have not committed to reverting the anti-protest laws that were brought in by Suella Braverman, and where the Deputy Leader of the Opposition said along the lines of "now is not the time to review that" when a caller literally asked that question, I don't hold out much hope for them doing anything progressive in relation to this.
j0ej0ej0e commented on Use spacer components instead of CSS margins (2020)   mxstbr.com/thoughts/margi... · Posted by u/manojvivek

I do agree generally, but it's funny that the suggested solution (spacers) are basically back to the old 1px transparent gif trick from the 90s/early 00s.

Nothing wrong with the suggestion, but it's just ironic that we seem to be coming full circle again.

Next we'll probably have posts extolling <Table> components for layouts ;)

My company recently had a FE candidate supply a test using tables.

1. I don't know, maybe just don't be a piece of shit company.

2. JetBrains charges me $12 a month ($149 annually) for its entire suite of software. You think this tool by itself is worth $120 a year? For a personal license?

3. Developer's problem, not mine.

4. This is not an issue everywhere. You work with penny-pinching mongoloids.

Also you

Have you considered this is not an issue everywhere?

What alternative approaches did you try?

Would loading a placeholder image for the map and transitioning it in when ready help?

j0ej0ej0e · 5 years ago
Unless I recal incorrectly, LCP will finish when changes to that area are finished. So a placeholder is used, it will be pointless.

loading=lazy can actually negatively impact LCP
