You would be surprised how often people don't even notice if you respond to "hey, how are you", with "hi".

But, really, the script you're meant to follow goes like this:

    Hey how are you?
    Hey, good, how about you?
    Pretty good
Then, if the conversation is meant to continue, which it most often is not, one of you says "So ... what's up in your life?" or "So ... how's that thing you're working on going?" or some other more specific question.

Edit: let’s also not forget that “howdy” is a shortened version of “how do you do”

David E. Davis, founder of Automobile magazine was known to ask "Is your life a rich tapestry?" instead of the usual "How are you?". I like that.

What is it mean if your natural reaction is to just say "Yeah" with no thought and then continue

In general a professor is an entrepreneur. They are running a small business where they sell their product ("knowledge") to customers (business and industry) by means of sales and marketing (conferences and papers). Grad students are employees of this business, and of course the prof's incentive is to keep the good ones and fire (graduate) the bad ones, thus the reward for the student working hard is more hard work.
internetman55 · 8 years ago
But no good student who approaches the grad school process in a sane manner is going to work for a professor whose students stay there for 12 years and don't graduate. A common thing for deciding if you want to work with someone is seeing how long their students took to graduate, where they ended up, emailing them, etc.

Also musicians will often deride something that's new. Just look at transistor amplifiers. They're technically better, but won't excite most guitarists.

A lot of the "better" for musicians is imperfection.

internetman55 · 8 years ago
I feel like most guitarists are so extra about equipment. Most good guitarists I know will sound fine playing mediocre guitars through cheap amps, while a bad guitarist is just not going to sound good on anything

My grandpa is into his 80s without many health issues while drinking occasionally but not everyday or anything. His brothers all loved drinking more and died earlier in much worse condition. Hence I will just drink smaller amounts of alcohol and not obsess over such issues

I think the way you learn advanced math is going to class, reading a textbook, reading a paper, going to a talk, talking to a friend, etc.

Some background:

28 senators, and the New York Attorney General, had to tell Pai to stop the FCC voting on new rules last year because of all the fraudulent comments. The fake comments were made apparent over a year ago. https://www.cnet.com/news/net-neutrality-fcc-ajit-pai-bots-s...

The FCC refused to provide records to the NY AG in order to investigate the possibility of fake comments. In other words, the NY AG was the only part of the government investigating the fake comments, and the FCC actively worked against investigating them. https://news.slashdot.org/story/17/12/10/0037222/fcc-refuses...

Pai's office issued this response to calls to delay the vote:

This is just evidence that supporters of heavy-handed Internet
regulations are becoming more desperate by the day as their effort
to defeat Chairman Pai's plan to restore Internet freedom has stalled.
The vote will proceed as scheduled on December 14.
As promised, the FCC voted to repeal Net Neutrality.

And now, 7 months later, the FCC is saying there were fraudulent comments, and maybe they should redesign their website.
