This is one of those invulnerable-feeling youth things I think. You could get the idea punchmade dev is hiding his face based on krebs images. But I just Binged punchmade dev and saw at least 20 pictures of his face.

The correct term is “googled on Bing”

Many countries just hide poverty and homelessness. For instance by sending them all to a district foreigners don’t go to or know about.

I personally welcome cooperation with the Pentagon for OpenAI and other American companies. The disdain that seems to infest so many when it comes to working with our national defense organizations is both annoying and bewilderingly naive and that's even when we take into consideration all of the bad things that happen.

Strengthening partnerships with our government certainly doesn't make me mistrust OpenAI.

I am guessing none of your friends or family have been a victim of aggression directed by the Pentagon?

Is there any guarantee that if this goes wrong (let's say ETF's are hacked and lose their BTC) then assets in other ETF's are safe? Let's say BlackRock ends up on the hook for billions after their BTC ETF goes wrong. Are my shares in iShares NASDAQ 100 ETF safe?

I want to make sure I don't have any exposure to crypto world by owning stock ETFs. If there is any scenario that I am on the hook for crypto nonsense going south I am going to sell and just own selected stocks instead. I would greatly appreciate someone providing clarity on this issue.

You’re probably right about this issue. BTC is a bearer asset and is inherently difficult to store right- someone has to know the private key, and that someone could always irreversibly steal the funds (hopefully it’s multiple someones with a multisig). Especially with such a large pot of money all state backed hacker groups are going to be actively hunting for vulnerabilities.

The possibility of change exists, but one of the hardest promises Bitcoin makes is that you can't change the rules mid-game like what happened with stocks. That is one of the most attractive things about this asset class - if the US regulators want to change how a crypto is traded ... tough biscuits. They have to convince the market participants, globally, to trade the new way. The bar might be orders of magnitude higher than for getting rid of stock certificates.

People underestimate, I think, how much nudging happens at the institutional level which cryptocurrencies might shut down. It is a really exciting experiment from that perspective.

There’s a very small number of mining pools that control Bitcoin. All the USA has to do to force a hard fork is order them to run alternative mining software.

In economic terms, bond-buying and tax-paying are the exact same thing, real consumption forgone by current workers. IMO, the profligate deficit spending of the baby boomer generation's prime working years is a symptom of massive demand for government bonds rather than the cause of some moral failure by leadership.

Like, it is true that oversupplying government bonds creates some really nasty economic effects, but so does undersupply. The government budget is not a household budget, and it's simply not true that their debts can or should be paid back.

No. US Treasuries are one of the most liquid and easy to borrow against assets in the world. When institutions buy Treasuries, they use them as collateral to borrow against with new money created by the banking system. This money is then spent in the real economy. That’s very different from taxes.

I would guess any traffic ticket that was only $20 was a great number of years ago…
injeolmi_love · 2 years ago
It was smaller than that, some kind of bridge toll, then got multiplied by late payment up to that number

Shame and pride are such strong motivators.

My wife was taken by a very elaborate and well-crafted scam in November. In retrospect, it all sounds ridiculous... but in the moment, with kids in tow, it was very convincing. It was so traumatizing that when it was over and she finally realized it was a scam, she was relieved! They had convinced her she was going to jail and that was terrifying. Losing the money was less bad than going to jail.

It was also EXTREMELY well scripted with a TON of psychology and clever moments that were well rehearsed. They also had a background track playing with 'police station like' audio and had spoofed the Orange County Sheriff's phone number. One psychological trick that they employed was a very 'stepped' approach to the scam.

If you say it all out loud, it is obvious, but if you go step by step, each one was somewhat plausible. Lastly, by posing as law enforcement, they tugged on a natural tendency to follow orders and avoid being in trouble. My stomach drops when I think I am getting pulled over... being told you have an outstanding warrant was quite a gut punch for her.

Things to remember:

* ALWAYS hang up and call people on a phone number you enter yourself.

* If someone tells you to check the number by looking it up, they are very likely spoofing it. Hang up and call the police.

* The police don't call you if they are trying to serve a warrant, they show up.

* A judge's 'gag order' does not mean you can't talk to a family member or legal counsel.

* NEVER pull money out of an account for someone you don't know without talking to a friend or spouse.

* ANY change in the situation is a red flag - bring the money to the courthouse. - its getting late, we use an after hours processor - you are running out of time, just wire it

I’ve received so many of these scam calls from fake authorities that I used to just hang up (now I don’t answer calls ever). One time I didn’t hang up because something felt weird. Turned out it was legit and I owed a $20 traffic ticket from years ago. I’m pretty certain it wasn’t a scam, maybe it was.

Worth considering in light of Vitalik’s recent essay “Make Ethereum Cypherpunk Again” which addresses how blockchains lost their original cypherpunk roots to financialization and the accompanying statist interventions.

My assumption would be visa-holders will be able to open a bank account. Otherwise it doesn't really make sense.

You can open a bank account, but the daily limits are low.
