That's untrue. I've created https://monokai.pro, to my knowledge the first commercial theme. It's been going strong for years now.

People are willing to pay for nice things. Especially if it takes longer to create it yourself.

A theme is more than a list of colors. Monokai Pro contains custom designed icons and color filters too, and some code logic to sync it all up. It needs continued updates, as editors keep evolving with new UX/UI elements.

I paid happily for monokai pro vscode since it was a one time payment. However I will not purchase a subscription for jetbrains intellij because per year it'll cost me the same amount as the intellij idea ultimate and that just doesn't seem like a fair price.

I appreciate someone working on a sizable codebase to put in their opinion. Too often it's just feedback on their experience with a Hello World analog and it's easy to get hyperbolic opinions off of that.

Yes, but not everybody builds the next social network or complex commercial app with 50 pages and 150 forms. It used to be that svelte was the perfect choice to build simple spa fronts to backend services, there already was react for complex applications. Now we have 2 additional reacts with svelte and vue and no mainstream simple framework for smaller stuff. Why does everybody feel they need to build eventually the same thing, but slightly different?

Had exactly the same experience. I even provided my real drivers license -- something I normally would never do. Didn't convince them I am a real human being that matches what's on the ID.

I never understood why people think so highly of Hetzner.

> real drivers licence

Drivers licence as a personal ID is not really a thing in Europe. It's accepted at some places, but either passport or your state provided ID-card is much preferred.

I’ve never seen a graphics person using a windows machine in all my years in tech…

Maybe I’m in some sort of bubble.

Yes you are. You probably live in the US, Canada or the UK.

Working on the official Light version and accompanying website of https://monokai.pro

Thank you for working on light theme, it seems that 90% of themes are dark nowadays. Depending on languages I switch between dark and light themes and for the latter there's lot less choice. My brain has gotten used to that Java and R must have light themes, most other languages dark. I even have different color theme for each language. It's how my brain works.

there are ways to minimize memorization, most important:

1. keep log, docs, records of whatever you are doing. most commands are repetitive.

2. copilot or chatgpt, they help a lot with command lines and simple utilities

3. amazon Q sucks in comparison.

4. it used to be google, but now LLMs do it better. less scrolling and ads/spam.

ihateolives · a year ago
Yes, either all that above or just GUI for rare occasions.

Last time I got myself a new laptop (2 years ago), I just removed the SSD (with Linux on it) from the old one and put it in the new one. (It was larger than the included one anyway, I had previously upgraded it.)

…it simply booted and continued working as before. No driver reinstall, no reconfiguring things. I don't remember but I don't think I even had to muck with BIOS/UEFI boot settings or anything.

Downside: a year later the SSD died ;D (possibly age/use related, it was 5~6 years old at that point)

ihateolives · a year ago
If Linux kills SSDs in 5-6 years then it's not a good sign.

Apache with mod_php actually takes just "apt install libapache2-mod-php8.2" to work.
ihateolives · a year ago
Why use mod-php when you have fcgi and fpm?

Can you share more? There is nothing missing, it’s all the same code that we run in production (besides some login changes to keep it decoupled from the platform)

ihateolives · a year ago
From top of my head: reports and multiple projects. Also I kept getting weird "fetch failed" errors when creating rules or adding users from gui working behind reverse proxy so I gave up on the end.
