It means getting the nucleus to absorb a certain energy above its ground state. Since it is a quantum object, it can only absorb/emit energy in very specific amounts at once (“quanta”).

The details of how the nucleus manifests that extra energy are complicated, but you can imagine it as like, picking up a certain vibrational frequency.

But then what happens? Does it expel an electron/release energy etc.?

Not a physicist, so I am asking out of curiosity and to learn: have the limitations to the precision of current atomic clocks posed any problems?

If I remember correctly GPS is effected but the ultra precise version the gov uses can error correct pretty well. I would think greater GPS precision at a lower cost?

Google is doing what the street wants, which is a proxy for shareholders. The increase in ads revenue, the first ever dividends, and the layoffs. These are the tools that the leadership have, and mostly short-term. The long-term innovations haven’t really taken hold. So, this may be the flame burning the brightest before it goes out.

People have been saying that about Microsoft for ages but it keeps growing and chugging along. I use a minimum of 7 Google products everyday, they came up with all of the research for LLMs, they have the only self driving car that actually works, run the largest smartphone OS in the world by a mile etc. They’re not going anywhere.

Yes, yes, and yes. Unfortunately it is all talk, they don't care a hat about environmental concerns.

All is about the bottom line, and that's why they're stingy with the ram as well.

huytersd · 2 years ago
Ah give up the hysterics. Sure they care about the environment. They do a lot based on the materials they use, packaging, power for their factories and campuses etc. but they also care about their bottom line like a successful company does. This sort of hyperbolic comment falls flat because it’s reactionary and lazy.
huytersd commented on How to prevent Lyme disease this summer   news.harvard.edu/gazette/... · Posted by u/sizzle

Why would you not believe it? It's normal where I live too. I definitely get dozens of bites every year and have been formally diagnosed with and treated for Lyme twice because it's pretty easy to miss one. Tick bites are very often completely painless and they often choose very discreet locations for their meal.

Keep in mind tick season is March to June and September to December (although it started in February this year because of unusual weather). That's a lot of days with "1-2 ticks" and it adds up.

huytersd · 2 years ago
I’ve never had a tick bite I could miss. They form a blister and itch like crazy for a couple of days. I wonder if the inflammatory response goes away if you get bitten too often. I know it happens with mosquitos if you get bitten too often.

That just supports my argument that men shouldn’t have to try to get laid. It should be provided for free by the state.
