It’s not a simple request for people living paycheck to paycheck. We could’ve shut down international travel, implemented UBI or expanded Medicare instead of trillions in corporate bailouts. It’s laughable to blame idiot citizens for the scale of the devastation, but a convenient scapegoat to shift the focus away from the ones in power who could’ve made the most difference.

Oh yes it’s all paycheck to paycheck people congregating in Central Park.

> I don’t blame governments. I blame all you idiots who won’t stop going outside.

It's precisely this kind of reasoning that this article is having problems with. Pre-COVID19, it was because of the terrorists, drug dealers, and pedophiles that we'd have to give up our freedoms. Now, it's because of "us idiots." We the people are "too idiotic" to decide for ourselves, or so you say.

The shelter in place orders started off completely voluntary. People ignored them. And it escalated. People continued to ignore and the policies continued to escalate. We didn’t go from zero to where we are now. People caused this.

How about we loan them the money at 16% interest, which is about the average interest rate for an airline credit card.

And the loans go to the front of the line in any bankruptcy proceedings.

Then I’m okay with allowing them to make their own silly rules.

It’s too bad that people can’t follow simple requests. Governments are forced to choose between allowing idiot citizens to destroy society or to implement draconian policies.

Medical professionals are being asked to come out of retirement. Nurses are reusing PPE for weeks. Medical students are graduating early to help.

The rest of us are being asked to just stay the fuck home for a few weeks.

And we just refuse to do it. Absolutely refuse. Everyone is suddenly and avid walker. So then governments have to choose whether to let idiot citizens ruin everything... or not.

I don’t blame governments. I blame all you idiots who won’t stop going outside.

You're right, you can declare bankruptcy and go into administration. That's your way out.

You don't get to arbitrarily stop paying, and also keep doing business as usual.

“Get” is an interesting choice of word. They won’t escape without any punishment but they certainly can do this.

Their landlord can take them to court... when the courts open.

I’m convinced they do this on purpose. The more time you’ve invested, the more likely you are to acquiesce and pay their exorbitant shipping fee.
hurricanetc · 6 years ago
I guess I am in the minority because as soon as I see a shipping fee more than 7-10% of the cost of the item I immediately start looking elsewhere. Numerous times I've just decided to not buy an item because I didn't want to pay the shipping costs.

The tactics Apple employs are so outlandishly anticompetitive it’s almost comical. Sure, it’s not a smartphone monopoly, but in the iPhone app market, Apple reigns supreme - and it is a tyrannical reign.
hurricanetc · 6 years ago
It's a real stretch to suggest that Apple is a monopoly because they control their own platform. By that definition anyone who has a closed platform is operating a monopoly. Is Netflix a monopoly? Fiverr?

One of the principles of competition law is prevent a company from abusing a dominant position or to prevent a company from obtaining a dominant position through abuse. Apple does not have a dominant position.

The question is how common they are compared to COVID-19.

If not very, I'd rather risk and take it, than have no option.

Another side effect is cardiac arrest. I am not a doctor but from basic reading I have done the dosage seems extremely important.

We had a paid chat app for social media celebrities/models to earn money chatting with their fans years back. Apple argued that despite a human being doing the work it 'took place in the app' so that makes it a 'digital service'. That means we had to accept IAP and of course pay them 30%. Made it impossible to to pay our influencers fairly.

One of the many silly rejections we had was due to the images on our influencers profiles being too sexy despite being linked through the Instagram API. After explaining they were the same as you can find in the Instagram app we were told we had to actively censor them anyway. Shame on us for not being as big as Instagram, right?

After a year of making less margin from our own business than Apple they concluded paid chat was no longer appropriate for the app store and decided to just put us out of business one morning. Meanwhile, tons of other apps with the same functionality and far more sexualized are alive and doing well.

It can't be easy making every developer happy while curating the tidal wave of apps coming in each day, but it was a really soul crushing experience for us.

hurricanetc · 6 years ago
I had a similar experience except it was Google. Google outright killed the app and punished our developer account while Apple happily let it continue.

We tried distributing the apk and going through Amazon but it was fruitless. So now it’s just iOS and we have to explain why over and over and over again.

Apple is so due for antitrust it’s ridiculous. Google too.
hurricanetc · 6 years ago
People say this often but Apple only has about 20% of the smartphone market. They don’t have anywhere near a monopoly.
