Isn't most of the point of computers driving us so they can react to things we can't? I dont know why that bit would be turned off... Seems seriously problematic. Secondly, that looks like a really bad place to be pushing your bike at night.

It's not clear exactly how this helps him work compared to just using hosted versions of the services.

It looks like there could potentially be a lot of maintenance to keep multiple individual servers up and running, and this is probably multiple side project in and of itself.

My thoughts exactly. I was hoping to find something more useful than the same benefits t I'd get from a free azure subscription.

How does it set a disturbing precedent? Business has always pursued money over morality under a capitalist system.
helthanatos · 7 years ago
Because it's borderline insanity. "I don't like your state's policy on x, so bye." Trying to bully entire governments is not cool.

> What changed that I was unaware of? As far as I know, it still makes traffic flow much more efficient in most situations.

Right turn on red was mostly implemented to avoid having cars idling waiting for a timer-only light to turn.

Between modern cars with fast engine stop/start and modern sensor technology which triggers lights when there is no opposing traffic, there are a lot of good reasons to remove that rule again.

helthanatos · 7 years ago
You would have to add a right turn arrow for your logic to pan out.

The safest place to cycle, among 40 mph traffic, is in the middle of the lane where it is 100% obvious to everyone driving that you are there.

Now tell that to random people and they will get angry and upset and wish you harm.

It seems like the problem isn’t the lack of bicycle infrastructure, it’s the ingrained culture.

helthanatos · 7 years ago
It's also a problem with people not being smart enough to pass someone on a bike, which causes everyone in cars anger. I can't wait for cars to be not operated by humans. It will be safer for everyone.

The big problem is "Right Turn On Red" aka "How Dare A Pedestrian Slow Me Down".

We need to get rid of that rule now that the justification for it no longer exists.

helthanatos · 7 years ago
I live in an area with very little pedestrian traffic. Getting rid of right on red would just make traffic worse and add confusion.

Is this for real? Was it deleted specifically on Google Photos, with a local copy still available or possibly available if it hadn't already been cleared locally? Or was it a legitimate "reach into local storage and clear it"?
helthanatos · 7 years ago
It was only local.

Could they face repercussions over this? That is unsettling that they can remotely manipulate your phone without your permission.
helthanatos · 7 years ago
They can also delete media from your phone. Had a graphic video of that carnival ride breaking and killing someone and it was deleted...
helthanatos commented on Airplane Mode: A concrete box designed to seduce you into digital disconnection   sfchronicle.com/style/art... · Posted by u/helloandyhihi

Why do I need a concrete box with a leather cradle for this? My phone has a feature - conveniently also called “airplane mode” - that does this.
helthanatos · 8 years ago
Maybe you want to turn on airplane mode and put it in "airplane mode" for double-meassure security. Maybe you want a Faraday cage made with the finest craftmenship. Maybe you just want to ignore work and tell your boss that it wasn't possible because your phone had no signal and it wasn't your fault it had no signal (in case your employer keeps track of that sort of thing.)

Coincidentally, it was also the era with 37 ie toolbars and constantly having to clean out the infected family pc every week only to find it infected the next day. Definitely the fun times.

I would have totally taken away admin and maxed UAC. "Why can't I install this Ralphy?" "Because it's a virus!" Personally, I like the choice of app stores and installing anything or installing a third party app store.
