Ask the question the other way round: will modern ad copy seem as different as this to readers in a hundred years time?
gumernatorial · 9 years ago
It undoubtedly will, if words are even a meaningful concept at all.

Why can't browsers do image differencing to detect when the page contains something pretending to be the browser or OS chrome, and plaster warnings overtop?

I wonder how this style of advertising would work in a modern SaaS product.

It would be a rebellion against virtually every principle of modern ad copy while still being rooted in something that sold units. Might try it.

Open sourcing, data export and a 2 months notice forward are pretty respectful in my book. I wish these where standard procedures for the industry.
gumernatorial · 9 years ago
On the flip side, it was users demanding free service (under which I include gracious data export) that killed the product in the first place.

I hope we find a way to pay for this stuff more than I hope getting it free becomes standard.

Willing to share if you share your email. Wouldn't say it's great but I've been around the block and it's landed me multiple offers.

What I don't get is, why do they have to store the telemetry data encrypted locally. Why can't I see what my computer is sending off.
gumernatorial · 9 years ago
Presumably so that other applications can't mine telemetry for nefarious reasons.

I can't wait until retail stores start trying to charge more for signature edition. Pay more for less!
gumernatorial · 9 years ago
To be fair, many internet business models operate on the principle of paying to get less garbage (such as ads). And it makes sense from an economic perspective that if you're not being bribed by crapware vendors you'd want to recoup the opportunity cost.

Agreed.

But is threatening a block spree, baiting people so you can banish them, after declaring you don't care to empathize with them really promoting more positivity? Or is this just a piece we can upvote and get outraged over to feel better about having done nothing?

The idea is that the government wants its fair part of tax.

But considering how all collected data in the US somehow ends up being able to be accessed by any and all departments that want it...

How long before purchasing a watch, an Arduino and a gun will result in SWAT kicking in your door?

gumernatorial · 9 years ago
People have been killed by police for much less.

The question is how long it is before it's no longer newsworthy that "police shot and killed a suspected terrorist who had purchased the components necessary for a remotely fired gun; up next, how you can keep your children safe from these threats online".
