I buy wool sweaters from Europe. I don’t know of US equivalents to what I buy, and I doubt they’d be as cheap if I did find them, even with (expensive) shipping from Britain and Nordic countries.

I bought a linen sheet from Lithuania this year. I couldn’t find any in the US that weren’t just similar probably-imported-from-Lithuania-or-Italy foreign ones marked way up, or that didn’t set off my “this is low-quality bullshit sold at a premium” alarms.

I don’t know of a US equivalents to Dent’s Gloves. Not at the same price/quality combo, in those styles.

Raber Garbage Mitts from Canada. Dunno of US equivalents.

Last time I ordered Meermin shoes they shipped from Spain. They have or had some presence in NY too, but Spain’s where they shipped from.

If you want equestrian leather shoes, I dunno of anywhere but places that ship from Spain and Portugal that won’t empty your bank account for them.

Western riding shoes (“cowboy boots”), best bang for your buck by a long shot will probably come straight from Mexico. Or maybe Argentina.

Best bargains in decent hats I know come straight from Canada, the EU/Britain, Mexico, or Australia.

[edit] OK, so then what do I buy that’s made in America? Red Wing boots, Darn Tough socks, Rancourt and Company for loafers and mocs and such, Pendleton wool blankets and shirts (the cloth’s made in the US, anyway, though the sewing’s usually elsewhere) and a bunch of other MIUSA (and some Canadian and Italian) clothes but I only buy them used because I don’t make FAANG or finance tier wages (stuff like Sid Mashburn, made in NYC) so I’m not actually giving those companies money.

Which store do you use for the wool sweaters?

Hey at least it will reduce consumerism in the US. Will probably send us straight to a recession though

Interesting. I feel like the majority of toilets (in my US city) have both buttons and it's been that way for almost a decade.

The only time they don't is when it's a toilet that's over 10 years old.

I could be wrong, especially since I mostly just use my own toilet (has two buttons, is 6 years old) or a urinal.

Maybe it's because in the northeast rains so much that people here think water is unlimited

> Average per-capita domestic water use in the US is 82 gallons per day. By comparison, German homes use around 33 gallons per person per day, UK homes use around 37 gallons, and French homes use around 39 gallons.

I want to know way more information about these figures... like, are there significant outliers? Drastically different usage profiles?

gonzalohm · 4 days ago
One thing that shocks me as an immigrant from Europe to the US is toilets. I have not seen a single one that has the two buttons, one for pee and one for the other stuff.

Every time I use the toilet it uses 1.6 gallons. 6 liters...

I think in my home country more than 90% of home toilets are the "low water usage one" (with 3 and 6 liters buttons)

And that's only the start, I noticed that people just don't care about water usage over here. People take water from wells with little oversight. In my home country you need a vast amount of bureaucracy to be allowed to take water from aquifers

Same reason people use any social network: because your friends, family and/or people you otherwise/somehow care about are there.

If they're on Instagram, aren't they necessarily also on SMS, plus a billion other people? All ad-free?

gonzalohm · 6 days ago
SMS is stuck in the past, even with RCS. Apple has used SMS as the wall of their walled garden for years. As an android user, it was extremely annoying to text to Apple devices (and still is to some degree)

I agree 100% and when I encounter people that don't believe this theory I point out that, once upon a time, Southwest Airlines used to be able to turn an entire 737 in 10 minutes.

I'm just dipping my toe into Data Version Control - DVC. It is aimed towards data science and large digital asset management using configurable storage sources under a git meta layer. The goal is separation of concerns: git is used for versioning and the storage layers are dumb storage.

Does anyone have feedback about personally using DVC vs LFS?

gonzalohm · 9 days ago
My main complaint about DVC is that it's hard to manage the files and if you keep modifying a big file you are going to end up with all the revisions stored in S3 (or whichever storage you choose). This is by design but I wish it was easier to set up like "store only the latest 3 revisions"

I completely disagree. I don't know if it's just me or the "European mindset" but I find the NYC metro to be one of the most confusing subway systems in the world.

- You have trains that don't stop an all the stops of the line. - You have lines that share the same tracks but go to different destinations (that's okay for trains, but for a subway?!?) - You better listen to the crappy PA because if you don't you may end up in an express train, far away from where you want to go. Or pay attention to the electronic signs (if you are lucky and they work)

I think with the help of an app is usable, but I don't know how I would have managed 20 years ago

gonzalohm · 22 days ago
Oh and another thing that it's extremely annoying and poorly designed. The stations with unreachable tracks. You pay your fare only to find out that you have to use a different entrance to reach your track. In all the other subway systems I used, you pay your fare and you are free to roam the whole station and reach any track

As someone who was recently in NYC for a conference, I found the subway system very easy to navigate in the 21st century. It was pretty cool to not need any cabs or cars at all, for a whole week.

The Transit app makes it trivial to navigate between any given two points on the most efficient route. A current version of this game would require prohibition of navigation apps, as well as asking directions.
