glass3 commented on Pursuing status will never bring true happiness   every.to/no-small-plans/t... · Posted by u/herbertl

The article feels very coherent to the point that I want to follow its advice. But will it work?

>Status, like money and power, is a form of capital. If we can learn to tolerate our feelings of “not-enoughness,” we can then use status in service of what we care about, rather than being addicted to it as an end in itself.

If we can tolerate 'not-enoughness', what would be there that needs change? As a society, don't we have to tolerate addiction because that's the loop that drives our progress?

>Casey Rosengren is a founder and executive coach based in New York. If you’d like to learn more about ACT and values-oriented coaching, drop him a note.

'founder' - Does he use the title 'in service' or is he still trapped in the status game? In the latter case, is his advice still valid?

I’ll be frank, Palantir and their customers and their suppliers scare the bejesus out of me. Chinese spy apps and balloons and what not, not so much.

I can be convinced though. The trouble is I’ve not heard a coherent explanation what China is going to do with a bunch of videos of people doing stupid stuff that could remotely impact my life or national security. If I were China I’d just use my overwhelming dominance in all manufacturing to make Trojan horses in basically everything then back door the world. Seems like they would be capable and it would be a lot more effective than knowing what every tween in America is interested in.

In my career I’ve seen what Palantir offers behind closed doors. I’ve seen what Google at least at one point was offering behind closed doors using their dominance in real time local data. Even if you trust Google, why on earth do you trust their data customers?

Have you seen bioemerl's comment about television? The one who controls the weights in TikTok's selection algorithm determines what people are going to believe.

I have doubts about their finances but that comparison makes no sense. SVB is a bank, Binance is a cryptocurrency exchange that doesn't have the fiat custody issue to that extend because they're mainly not dealing in fiat. It's more of a question of how companies like Tether have invested their dollars and the answer is nobody really knows.

Tether has the same problem. What happens to Binance's Tether coins if Tether's bank collapses?

unhappily, i was diagnosed with arthritis at quite an old age (60+) after happily eating tomatoes and tatties for all my life. i won't say what i think about advice like this.
glass3 · 3 years ago
There are two kinds of arthritis and the age-related one shouldn't be linked with food.

Disney and Apple are close. Does this mean that there is not much to be expected from Apple's VR headset launch this year?

annecdata:

aspirin is pretty good as an anti-inflamitory and hence pain-killer. the reason i don't take it is that it irritates the stomach, and i have enough issues with my insides as it is (irritable-bowel syndrome - not fun)

i currently use cocodamol (codeine and paracetomol) to control my arthritic pain, but it isn't doing so great. at the end of the day, if you really need pain control, you probably want a pure opioid of some kind. and yes, i do know that codeine is an opioid.

Hopefully Binance still has all the money customers deposited and didn't lose it or trade it for magic beans like FTX did.

If a lot of customers take out their money and Binance goes out of business, that's fine. I mean, it sucks for Binance, but they are kinda shady and the world might be better off without them. If customers find out their deposits don't exist anymore, that's definitely not fine.

>Hopefully Binance still has all the money

How can they? SVB has made it clear that it is very difficult to maintain value. If Binance has invested all their money in securities, it's not unlikely that their investments have gone done down with the rising of the interest rates.

If they keep all money in regular banking accounts, they may still have it. But they are exposed to the risk that their bank or their banks become insolvent.

Really?

An operating theatre cost many thousands of dollars an hour to run, the pre and post care is also very expensive. You may never need them (I hope you do not) but if you do it would almost surely bankrupt you without either socialised medicine (yay - sort of - another story) or insurance.

The markets don't work if delivering a child leads to bankruptcy. Either people pay for unnecessary procedures or those procedures cost too much.

In which way will they make it different from the Meta headsets? The Apple branding won't be enough to turn an average headset into a successful product.

My guess would be that their headset is just a set of goggles that requires an iPhone for computation. Then, they can sell them for $300 or even $150.

The article suggests that VR is a tool for long-distance relationships. For $300, that could become possible.
