Anyone has recommendations for open source self host video recorder and processor?

Frigate has been ok for me when paired with a gpu or tpu for to speed up the object recognition features. It's the closest I've found to the usual IP camera cloud sold by the IP camera manufacturers.

That said, it's installation method uses containers, which I could do without. Configuring it can feel a bit fiddly depending on the hardware you have, but that's likely to be the case with most NVR systems that support a wide variety of setups.

I didn't realize you could get Taptic Engines. I had wanted some about 10 years ago while I was working on a haptic data glove project, but Apple kept them under tight wraps because they own the patent and wanted them exclusive to their devices. I ended up using small pager motors, but I really think Taptic Engines would have made for a much better experience, both because they are smaller and because they are 3 axis linear vibrators, instead of a single axis rotary vibe.

I wanted to do something similar 3-5 years ago, and while I found that you could order the Taptic Engine, I couldn't find any good info for driving them last time I checked.

I suspect I'm not alone in this here on HN: The first thing I did when offered the coffee shop questions was start figuring out how to answer them.

I have no interest whatsoever in owning a coffee shop. I just like questions.

gkhartman · 2 months ago
I had a similar response. I started the process of "unpacking" as soon as I read it.

I have encountered many people who don't do this to such an extent. I'll admit that I'm a bit envious of their ability to have a daydream about running a coffee shop without envisioning/questioning every little detail that can arise.

As a Linux fan and owner of a Sync 1.0 vehicle I feel your pain. I want to replace it with something aftermarket, but the cost of a dash kit is pretty steep if you want one of decent quality. I reboot it weekly, which takes minutes, so it doesn't freeze during the week. I'm guessing there's memory leak that takes a while to accumulate.

Hardest to cool cpu I've ever owned was an AMD Athlon 3200+. I remember moving to P4, and life got a lot easier. It still ran very hot, but it could do so without frequent crashing. This was before the giant coolers that we have today were common place. I was far too afraid of water cooling back then.

I'm irrationally excited about two of my more niche hobbies ('puters/OSS and guitar) colliding. I've built several PedalPCB [1] and BYOC [2] pedal kits and used Tayda pre-drilled enclosures as Linus is apparently planning on as well. I've been using Fractal stuff live since before it was cool but there's something intangibly awesome about slamming the front end of an old AB763 circuit with a homemade dirtbox.

Glad to see I'm not alone. The fuzz face clone from tonepad was my first project. It's really satisfying to create stuff using a tool you've created.

It's more an experiment whether people will trust the rando running this.

Also, if you want to try this make sure of the legality of your "experiment" because inevitably someone will snitch on you.

Is there a way to remove the author trust factor? I suppose you'd have to pay in crypto to keep it anonymous, and this app would give you a random QR for a strangers wallet. How can you confirm that it's not the authors wallet, or an alt. Seems tricky.

That said, a donor could do the same thing by dropping cash in an area with high pedestrian traffic, and walking away without looking back. That said, those interested in the data collection aspect would be disappointed by that method.
