gishh commented on Everyone in Seattle hates AI   jonready.com/blog/posts/e... · Posted by u/mips_avatar

I’ve been an engineer for 20 years, for myself, small companies, and big tech, and now working for my own saas company.

There are many valid critiques of AI, but “there’s not much there” isn’t one of them.

To me, any software engineer who tries an LLM, shrugs and says “huh, that’s interesting” and then “gets back to work” is completely failing at their actual job, which is using technology to solve problems. Maybe AI isn’t the right tool for the job, but that kind of shallow dismissal indicates a closed mind, or perhaps a fear-based reaction. Either way, the market is going to punish them accordingly.

I have solved more problems with tools like sed and awk, you know, actual tools, more than I’ve entered tokens into an LLM.

Nobody seemed to give a fuck as long as the problem was solved.

This it getting out of hand.

gishh commented on Valve reveals it’s the architect behind a push to bring Windows games to Arm   theverge.com/report/82065... · Posted by u/evolve2k

Valve is estimated to make $16.2 billion from Steam alone in 2025 [0], and CS:GO loot boxes only netted them ~1bn in 2023 [1] (and CS:GO player count is only slightly higher now compared to 2023, so I expected the income number is similar).

Why don't they just take a 6% pay cut and make sure there is nothing to criticize them about :/

Valve selling skins is just so trivial relative to dopamine-inducing doom-scrolling, social media in general, the toxicity of the news cycle, I can keep going.

It would be super democrat-american to address valves loot boxes before, say, fucking healthcare.

We need a government priority Jira board of things that need to be addressed. Loot boxes _might_ make the backlog.

  > embarrassed to check in a pile of slop
Part of being a true junior, especially nowadays, is not being able to recognize the differences between a pile of slop from useful and elegant code.

More to the point, I think part of being a senior is being able to dig up code you wrote a few years ago and say “how awful”

... Oh, come on now. I can't tell whether you're extremely confused about Sanders and Mamdani, or extremely confused about Stalin and Mao.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/mar/25/bernie-sande... would have gone very differently if Sanders was Mao, for a start.

You really think if they had the unchecked power of Stalin or mao they would be… better?

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. It’s a no-kidding literary tool used throughout history.

Jacobin is not a whole journal on literal communism.

It’s a magazine with a professed socialist view point but it’s more aligned with left-of-center American politics. Think Sanders or Mamdani rather than Stalin or Mao.

> Sanders or Mamdani

Sanders and Mamdani are about as far left of center as one can get at the moment, such that they almost meld into Stalin or Mao.

The mental gymnastics you’re doing to blunt that fact is absolutely incredible.

I'm curious, what are you working on that requires writing inline assembly?
gishh · 13 days ago
I worked on a C codebase once, integrating an i2c sensor. The vendor only had example code in asm. I had to learn to inline asm.

It still happens in 2025

How is there such a gap between Gemini 3 vs GPT 5.1/Opus 4.5? What is Gemini 3 crushing the others on?

Thats not the point.

Deepmind is not an UK company, its google aka US.

Mistral is a real EU based company.

Using US VC dollars. Where their desks are isn’t really important.
