> it doesn't really affect me in the slightest as a normal user

What is a "normal user"? Previously, FastMail customers could get a Family plan that supported custom domains for as low as $10/user/year. New customers who require custom domains must now pay at least $50/user/year. A 400% price increase is a fiasco.

I think they now offer one extra domain per user and same space, which I think was not the case earlier (I could be wrong here).

After the fastmail fiasco (they increased prices, and now old packages no longer have access to the newest features), I started looking for an alternative and came across mailbox.org... I've been trialing for a few days and they do seem interesting.

I just wish we could use an unlimited number of aliases in our own domain, it doesn't make sense to me otherwise..

They do have some interesting features, such as mailbox encryption as well as calendar/contacts encryption. It's client-side encryption, though it's in the browser.

An alternative to mailbox.org is mailfence.com.

I was about to move from Google to Fastmail (been looking to move away from Google for a while) and then I read your comment. Now rethinking the decision.

Not saying I do or don't agree with him, but you don't have to be wrong to be preachy. When you're a comedian you need to be at least 80% funny. If you're 50% funny 50% preachy I'm not going to bother. Southpark use to danced this line pretty successfully.

That would then include a lot of comedians and many legends. George Carlin comes to mind, to begin with. I do not agree with - you are X so you do X only.

What aspect of systems programming would you like to be enlightened about? I do a lot of consumer electronics programming, which I think falls into that category.

I grew up learning programming on a Commodore 64, where getting anything done meant twiddling bits and writing to registers of various hardware devices. Writing device drivers today can provide the same sort of thrill, since the work is quite similar. A lot of my time in high school and college in the 90's was spent learning all about UNIX and Linux, so it feels very natural today when I develop user-space tools that bring value to the user. Outside of nostalgia, there's plenty of bleeding-edge work to keep things interesting -- audio/video processing, extending platforms such as Android, security, etc.

Sounds exciting. I want to know how to make a switch, if one can. I am in the same position (mostly webdev) as the gp. I do understand that "systems programming" is very broad.

Can someone explain to me why is it wrong (cynical) to think they didn't have this capability all along?

My first professional rule is to try to be one of the dumbest people in the room. By that I mean, I want to surround myself with people who know more about things that I don't know much about. At my last job, there were five engineers. One was the best manager I've ever had and taught me a lot about being a professional. Another was a phenomenal software architect that taught me a lot about how to build large applications. Yet another really knew everything about the front-end, and the fourth was a terrible coder, but taught me a lot about how NOT to code.

My second professional rule is that when I stop learning, it's time to move on. I always want to challenge myself. If I'm not challenging myself, I'm not improving and, like you, I get bored.

I don't know a lot about your situation, nor do I have an inkling of your capabilities. That said, it sounds like your situation doesn't satisfy either of my two rules. If that's the case, I recommend you look around for something new, where you can find people that will push you to be better.

That said, there are other options. You may find that teaching others is a rewarding experience. Perhaps a more engaging social life will mitigate boredom at the day job. You may find that having some side projects can invigorate your interest. Or perhaps digging into another language or new technology can help keep you interested in your job.

You say you've got a lot of experience on the back-end. Maybe another step would be investigating more DevOps type roles. Implement containers and autoscale, automate deployments, build a CI server. Or look into starting a professional development group at work to teach or learn new skills. Ask directly for feedback. If nobody is offering, ask them. Offer to take on new responsibilities. Identify some pain point that the company has and solve it. It might lead to opportunities to grow the team.

If you're bored for too long, you're going to be miserable. The only way to fix boredom is to seek out change, whether that means a new job or a new skill or new friends. Unfortunately, this is a very, very common scenario out there. The good news is that it is entirely within your power to fix.

Good luck.

I am not sure but I doubt that most people would be able to find a job where you get to work with the most amazing people with skills you do not possess (or are not good at). I can certainly see how you can be the quietest but how does one get hired at a place where you know less then what they already do or are much better?

French and living in Paris here. I'm at home fortunately but I live nearby the places in the eastern side of Paris that were attacked.

Don't know what to say , just that I hope everybody and their families are safe.

This is hard, a very hard hit on my country. Vive la France.

Does that mean you won't file for the visa and one has to get the visa on their own?

Eh, the other comments are overreacting. If I was vomiting constantly, of course I wouldn't try to work.

But if I felt contagious-but-not-really-impaired, just sneezing or whatnot, I don't see any reason personally why sitting (at home) at a computer and watching Netflix is going to help me recover faster than sitting (at home) at a computer and working.

Also, possibly save your coworkers from the infection. I'd rather have my coworkers take a WFH than come in if they feel low.
