Hi, author here. I was wondering why the hell my server was acting strange, then checked counter.dev and saw a huuuge spike. Ah, hackernews..

Anyway, thanks for the feedback regarding the site itself, both positive and negative. This is a 1-2 man project, just for fun, but any feedback are always welcome :)

This is an understandable, but simplistic way of looking at the world. Are you also gonna blame Apple for mining for rare earths, because they made a successful product that requires exotic materials which needs to be mined from earth? How about hundreds of thousands of factory workers that are being subjected to inhumane conditions to assemble iPhones each year?

For every "OMG, internet is filled with ads", people are conveniently forgetting the real-world impact of ALL COMPANIES (and not just Apple) btw. Either you should be upset with the system, and not selectively at Google.

I dont think your comment justifies calling out any form of simplistic view. It doesnt make sense. All the big players are bad. They"re companies, their one and only purpose is to make money and they will do whatever it takes to do it. Most of which does not serve human kind.
fractalf commented on Using FreeBSD to make self-hosting fun again   jsteuernagel.de/posts/usi... · Posted by u/todsacerdoti

I'm using FreeBSD for self-hosting, home NAS and router from version 2.2.0. As it is my hobby projects, I don't want to migrate to Linux which is, IMHO, over-represented.

But it become harder and harder in recent years.

Reason? Docker.

Many current «server-side» products doesn't have good instructions how to install them «by hands» and is not very suitable for system-side packaging (creating port), as they have build systems designed to be used in CI with online access in build time (especially node.js-based and go-based ones, but rust goes same way).

Installation instructions, well-defined dependencies, good versioning, immutable source distribution files? Nah. «Take this Docker file and run it».

It is pity.

You can pretty much study the Dockerfile of each docker image and you'll see how it's installed. It's all there, no magic

I worked on this project a bit back in the day as a teen. Bricked my first iPod trying to get a DIY uClinux kernel to boot on it within hours of getting it for Christmas. Took bricking 8 more warranty replacements before I finally got Linux to boot.

Weeks later thanks to a lot of community help, finally found the memory address for audio out and got music playback that was not beholden to any DRM.

This work was all referenced by the RockBox team that made a tiny embedded kernel and OS far more suited to the tasks.

Now all devices that can run rockbox are EOL and other community members are working on an open hardware player to run Rockbox.

https://github.com/amachronic/echoplayer

Couple decades in, but we are finally close to having the first fully featured fully open hardware music player, which all started back with reverse engineering iPods to run Linux kernels.

As someone that does not carry a cell phone, I am absolutely excited about this as it would be a daily driver for me.

Thank you for being awesome! I still use RockBox on my old tiny 8GB "mp3" (flac really) player

All said and done, it is a very expensive and balsy way to undercut competitors. They’ve spent > $5B on hardware alone, much of which will depreciate in value quickly.

Pretty sure the only reason Meta’s managed to do this is because of Zuck’s iron grip on the board (majority voting rights). This is great for Open Source and regular people though!

Well, he didn't do it to be "nice", you can be sure about that. Obviously they see a financial gain somewhere/sometime

What if this is just a decoy and the real backdoor is elsewhere?
