gimp is an adobe photoshop replacement.

krita is an adobe illustrator replacement, something else entirely.

the developers working with firebase should enforce common-sense document crud restrictions in the rules. that's just how firebase is. everyone knows it.

now, when talking about ARC BROWSER, i am seriously starting to doubt the competence of the team. I mean, if the rules are broken (no tests? no rules whatsoever?), what else is broken with ARC? are we to await a data leak from ARC?

any browser recommendations with proper vertical tabs and basically everything working like it does in ARC?

Did you took a look at the zen browser? It's an arc clone based on Firefox https://zen-browser.app/

Looks like something you would order for $15 from aliexpress. Am I missing something about this?

To be fair, It's more comparable to MP3 players in the 50 to 100 usd range. (See zishan, f.audio, hiby, shanling, fiio, xduoo) The difference is it is using open source hardware and software. Chinese MP3 players have little repairability, limited to no modding and a terrible OS. This tries to fix that. Still expensive in my opinion but I'm waiting to see if people make interesting things out of it.

I must admit, I'm not sure why JPEG XL is viewed so favourably on HN, it's not something I know a ton about, but my understanding is that the big advantage of AVIF is that you can reuse hardware decoders built into devices for AV1 for the images.

It being a strict improvement over JPEG is nice for the developers not having to go back to the source image for an upgrade, but that seems like a pretty small benefit that only matters during the transitional period.

Meanwhile, if you are getting better battery life every time someone views an AVIF image, that's a huge benefit for the entire lifetime of the format, it seems to massively outweigh any advantage JXL has, to me.

Jpeg-XL is light enough to not require hardware support. Did you tried to transcode a PNG to avif? It's painful. Not the case with Jpeg XL. Meanwhile I urge you to read this article. Jpeg XL has way more features than avif.

fold3 commented on Solreader: E-Ink Smart Glasses for Reading   solreader.com/... · Posted by u/omarfarooq

Hey HN, I helped build the Sol Reader glasses and would love to answer any questions. It helps that I've spent months using the glasses and can attest to the increased amount of reading these glasses have unlocked. I have a 2 year old and making time for reading books is hard, but now I've found chunks of phone time being replaced with Sol time, esp. in the middle of the night when I don't want to have a light on that wakes my partner.

One note on the screen resolution, the screenshot linked on this thread is from our SDL2 simulator. The actual page feels more like paper, with warm eink artifacts and slight character bleed. No one who puts these glasses on talks about the resolution, instead they all have this huge smile on their face.

Will it have an unlocked bootloader? sd card slot? Do you need an app to add book in the device? (sounds like it from the tech specs)

Is it sweat/water resistant?

fold3 commented on Mastodon Is the Good One   404media.co/mastodon-is-t... · Posted by u/M2Ys4U

Mastodon is hard to use because people using social media don't expect to read anything before starting to use a service. TikTok, Instagram, etc really succeeded in frying people's brain over their addictive patterns.

Just the idea of a protocol that can be interacted with over different clients and different instances is hard to grasp.

IMO, Mastodon has to find ways to be more accessible in the onboarding process without compromising on the decentralization feature.

But it's not easy to do that without text?

There is F-droid Basic, which lacks a few less popular functions but contains a rework of app installation. It can install apps in background as well. It's very smooth in my case, works pretty much like auto updating on play store.

You can get it through... regular fdroid!

fold3 · 2 years ago
I could not make it work. Did you had to do anything special?

From what I learned, only apps that target Android 12and above could have this background update feature. I'm on Android 13 but none of the apps I use updated. I had to switch back to using the f-droid privileged extension.

fold3 commented on APCA Contrast Calculator   myndex.com/APCA/... · Posted by u/fold3
fold3 · 2 years ago
Accessible Contrast Relative to Font Size and Weight APCA reports lightness contrast as an Lc value from Lc 0 to Lc 106 for dark text on a light background, and Lc 0 to Lc -108 for light text on a dark background (dark mode). The minus sign merely indicates negative contrast, which means light text on a dark background.
