I would wager Waymo fails to integrate in NYC. Austin, and SF are child’s play.

I think there is probably title deflation going on. Yes, every engineer working at a FAANG is well-paid, and the H1Bs are no exception. But my feeling is they're probably at least a level lower than they would be if they didn't have the captive visa. And this only reinforces that they're all great workers.

In that case there’s absolutely no American that can fit that role

The best interview process I’ve ever done is sitting down with the team for 3 days, crashing on the founders couch for the weekend and shipping code

The worst ones were the leetcode interviews I couldn’t pass

The best way to do this has always been to accept a ton of students and weed out a big percent of them in intro courses.

Have the basic grades and test scores? Ok welcome to CS1 where 2/3 of you will not make it thanks for playing

This is very eye opening. As a geek with strong academic background always felt cheated by the system.

My professor explained that academics alone is not enough for success in life. He explained that some of the smartest engineers report to average business majors in companies. And he explained that that I cannot get any scholarships with perfect GPA while my roommate, a B student, has scholarships because he plays basketball and will likely get in leadership role in early on. That is good for the university as their graduates are seen as more successful.

It was a hard thing to listen to but I accepted it. I wish he told me the truth though.

I stopped writing as much code because of RSI and carpal tunnel but Claude has given me a way to program without pain (perhaps an order of magnitude less pain). As much as I was wanting to reject it, I literally am going to need it to continue my career.

they are executive roles in the sense that you are required to profitably allocate a scarce perishable resource (gpu time) way more expensive than any regular engineer’s time.
flappyeagle · 23 days ago
Yeah, you could definitely look at it that way. They are IC roles in the sense that their job is to tell computer computers what to do but maybe that’s old-fashioned thinking at this point.

Are you aware of the terms of such offers?

I suppose those $100M are spread across years and potentially contingent upon achieving certain milestones.

flappyeagle · 23 days ago
Even amongst the packages, there is a range. One example package was 100 guaranteed up to 250 based on milestones and incentives over five years
