Most frontier LLMs skew somewhere on the libleft quadrant of the political compass. This includes grok 4 btw. This is probably because American "respectable" media has a consistent bias in this direction. I don't really care about this with media. But media outlets are not "gatekeepers" to the extent that LLMs are, so this is probably a bad thing with them. We should either have a range of models that are biased in different directions (as we have with media) or work to push them towards the center.

The "objective" position is not "whatever training on the dataset we assembled spits out" plus "alignment" to the personal ethical views of the intellectually-non-representative silicon valley types.

I will give you a good example: the Tea app is currently charting #1 in the app store, where women can "expose toxic men" by posting their personal information along with whatever they want. Men are not allowed on so will be unaware of this. It's billed as being built for safety but includes a lot of gossip.

I told o3, 4-sonnet, grok 4, and gemini 2.5 pro to sketch me out a version of this, then another version that was men-only for the same reasons as tea. Every single one happily spat one out for women and refused for men. This is not an "objective" alignment, it is a libleft alignment.

I actually agree with your take, that a model trained on a dump of the Internet will be left-leaning on average, BUT I want to reiterate that obvious indoctrination (see the incident with Grok and South Africa, or Gemini with diverse Nazis) is also terrible and probably worse

Chroma does vector, full-text, and regex search. And, it's designed for multitenant workloads typical of AI applications. So, not just a "vectorDB company"
firejake308 · a month ago
yeah, but they benefit from convincing people not to dump everything in context, because the alternative is to dump everything in a db (like Chroma) and then retrieve only the relevant parts (whether that's using vector search or regex search or full-text search or whatever). I still think their thesis is correct, but readers should be aware of the author's bias and make their own judgment.

I can't work out what the best ratio of soldiers/workers in. It seems that for the first 30 seconds or so you need almost all soldiers to expand fast, but after that?

There's a lot of luck involved too, sometimes you'll just get dogpiled by two neighbours and there's not much you can do, but at least it's fast.

IME, ports generate way more income than workers, so I go for pretty much fully soldiers

I think it would be great to make mental healthcare accessible to everyone who could benefit from it, but have you actually run the numbers on that? How much would it cost and where would the money come from? Any sort of individual counseling or talk therapy is tremendously expensive due to the Baumol effect.

And even if we somehow magically solve the funding problem, where will the workers come from? Only a tiny fraction of people are really cut out to be effective mental health practitioners. I'm pretty sure that I'd be terrible at it, and you couldn't pay me enough to try.

This addresses the key problem. The lack of access to therapists is due to lack of therapists, because the demand far outweighs supply. It is simply not possible to train the number of therapists that we need, so technological advancement is probably the correct answer.

> The older students consistently scored higher on tests... The findings were true for children of all backgrounds, but especially for boys and for children from low-income families.

If redshirting benefits both boys and girls, it seems unfair to only offer it to boys, even if the boys benefit more than girls.

That's simply not true, it's not just "max thinking budget o3" just like o1-pro wasn't "max thinking budget o1". The specifics are unknown, but they might be doing multiple model generations and then somehow picking the best answer each time? Of course that's a gross simplification, but some assume that they do it this way.

> "We also introduced OpenAI o3-pro in the API—a version of o3 that uses more compute to think harder and provide reliable answers to challenging problems"

Sounds like it is just o3 with higher thinking budget to me

My experience is that if a community feels that land is underutilized they will simply tax at the value the community would like to see the land used.

We had a family farm that had our taxes go from under $4,000 to around $25,0000 in a single year. There was no warning it just happened. We ended up selling the farm in a few years at a value it was being taxed.

I also think that NIMBY/YIMBY is a strawman argument used to keep the conversation from developing.

> NIMBY/YIMBY is a strawman argument designed to keep the masses distracted

Distracted from what? I do in fact view NIMBYs as the biggest roadblock to expansion of housing supply, so I must be part of the distracted masses you're referring to. What am I missing?

Yeah, depends on how sensitive the trigger is, which is something you can't always control at a public restroom
