firefax commented on Ask HN: Are there any viable Android phones for a power user to buy nowadays?    · Posted by u/gooob

I hate to be "that guy", but why do you insist on a phone?

I used to have an EeePC back before decent mobile hotspot plans were affordable, I'd love to just use a dumbphone as a hotspot and do most of my computing on a small linux computer, but most of the flip phones I've found use 2G (yikes!)

firefax commented on Ask HN: How can I get better at using AI for programming?    · Posted by u/lemonlime227

How did you learn how to use AI for coding? I'm open to the idea that a lot of "software carpentry" tasks (moving/renaming files, basic data analysis, etc) can be done with AI to free up time for higher level analysis, but I have no idea where to begin -- my focus many years ago was privacy, so I lean towards doing everything locally or hosted on a server I control so I lack a lot of knowledge of "the cloud" my HN betheren have.

I don't have kids and my family is abusive, so I'll probably find the homeless folks I used to vent to during COVID around the neighborhood and pay them to listen to another airing of grievances with pizza on Festivus[1].

If I ever meet the person that invented lookbehind correction, I’m not sure I’ll be able to restrain myself. This person has robbed me of my peace of mind as I now have to be on guard every time I type anything on a mobile keyboard

your comment reminds me of this comic from the 2000s that became a bit of a meme back in the day

swap out "comic sans" with "aggressive lookbehind correction" and it'd fit perfectly ;-)

They went up to $1.25 in '21 I think. It was extensively cover by the press.

I'd love to see a citation on that, since I think you're mistaken -- there's plenty of things that are still a dollar, mostly stuff like packages of napkins or plastic cups, cards and other sundries.

(What was extensively covered was that they were no longer a "everything is a dollar" store.)

"the default is a dollar"

There is no default price.

firefax · 6 days ago
It's called "dollar tree" for a reason, historically prices were and are a dollar unless otherwise noted.

I had a clerk flip out on me a while back at a Dollar Tree because I wanted a charge for a dollar -- it rang up as 1.25. They rolled their eyes and told me not everything is a dollar, and I maintained that absent pricing stickers indicating otherwise, the default is a dollar. When I pointed out another way to look at it is it's a twenty five percent price discrepancy, someone came out of an office and literally screamed at me and chased me out of the store for "causing a problem", telling me that if I'm going to cause problems, so will she.

I wasn't cursing or yelling, just calmly making the points I made above as the employees took a dive bar approach to customer service...

It doesn't surprise me at all that this kind of thing is intentional -- they're banking on you not walking out without the item having carried it to the checkout.

I always assumed he spoke to the airport about what sorts of music it enjoys, this method seems needlessly hostile to user research.

firefax commented on Ask HN: Quality of recent gens of Dell/Lenovo laptops worse than 10 years ago?    · Posted by u/ferguess_k

I remember people I knew at conferences who were extremely fond of Thinkpads due to being Linux geeks (at a time when it was harder to find hardware support for things we now consider basic features like wifi) complaining when it went from IBM to Lenovo the build quality went down. OTOH they were looking at migrating to Dell...

I've had good luck with a Macbook Air and running a Debian VM for anything of import. The build quality is good and I can go to a physical location for repairs.

(Though over time more and more can't be fixed on site sadly.)
